Opportunity
As the Managing Director of Client Investment Strategy and Investment Product Management, you will lead engagement with clients on their investment objectives, risk preference, liquidity needs, etc. to shape client total portfolios and investment outcomes. You will oversee the design and management of AIMCo’s investment product offerings, ensuring they align with client objectives and AIMCo’s corporate strategy, while also leading client investment advisory functions.
This pivotal role demands a seasoned leader with a comprehensive understanding of financial markets, institutional investment management, investment products, and client dynamics. You will be tasked with crafting and executing strategies that not only meet the diverse needs of our clients but also position our firm as a leader in delivering effective investment solutions that support our clients’ success.
Your primary focus will be on developing and implementing investment product platform strategies, leading our client advisory function and engaging internally and externally on the implementation of client investment portfolios. This involves developing a deep understanding of our clients’ investment objectives, liabilities, liquidity needs, etc., conducting in-depth market analysis to identify evolving trends and client preferences, thereby guiding the development of suitable strategies for our clients. Collaborating closely with asset class, multi-asset portfolio management, and client service teams, you will ensure alignment between client objectives and their portfolio implementations, driving sustainable growth and competitive advantage.
In addition to client investment strategy, you will oversee the review of AIMCo’s investment platform and products to better meet clients’ investment objectives. This entails working closely with investment, and risk teams to identify gaps in the platform and opportunities for product innovation and differentiation, ensuring our offerings remain relevant and competitive in the ever-evolving financial landscape.
As a senior leader, you will play a critical role in fostering cross-functional collaboration and driving a culture of innovation and excellence. By providing direction and guidance to diverse teams involved in client investment strategy development, product management, and client relationship management, you will ensure alignment of efforts towards achieving organizational goals.

Responsibilities Include:
- Develop deep and trusting relationships with AIMCo’s clients, including a thorough understanding of each client’s objectives and needs
- Continuously improve client investment advice capabilities, growing impact on client outcomes through increased breadth and depth of client advice engagements
- Conduct market research and analysis to identify emerging trends and client needs, informing the evolution of our investment product platform – optimized for client needs.
- Work closely with investment, risk, client relationship management and other teams to identify product innovation and differentiation opportunities.
- Work closely with multi-asset portfolio management team to develop client-specific implementations for tactical and dynamic asset allocation views.
- Develop and facilitate execution of transition plans that proactively respond to changes in client investment policies, ensuring timely implementation, clear communication with stakeholders, and smooth portfolio adjustments aligned with each client’s strategic objectives.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, coaching and career development for the team.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, driving cross-functional initiatives to enhance client investment outcomes and satisfaction.
- Act as a subject matter expert and thought leader within the organization, providing guidance and mentorship to team members.
- Build connectivity and visibility in the investment management industry, peers and the Alberta investment community.
Our Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in investment and portfolio construction. Deep familiarity with multi-client organizations, multi-asset portfolios, including understanding of individual asset classes
- Experience in a senior or leadership capacity guiding, coaching and mentoring
- Experience in client and board engagement on investment topics
- Master’s degree or doctorate in Financial Mathematics, Business, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Computer Science or Actuarial Science
- Completion of CFA, PRM, FRM or actuarial designations would be an asset
- Expert understanding of financial markets, financial concepts, investment strategies, investment products and their underlying risk drivers
- Deep familiarity with asset liability and risk modelling
- Understanding of Institutional asset management for pension plans, insurance funds and endowments. Portfolio management experience is a plus.
- Understanding of market microstructure, transaction costs and implementation considerations
- Experience using investment management software applications
- Ability to translate business objectives and strategies into actionable business solutions
- Effective communicator, across the organization, and in client and board settings
- Effective team leader and mentor to others in the organization. Experience with building teams and functions a plus.
