Job Description - Manual Machinist-CAN-BC-Vancouver

Overview

 

Westport Innovations is a leading developer of technology and products designed to reduce pollutant emissions from heavy-duty diesel engines. Westport has built a world-recognized team of leaders focused on aggressively commercializing its technology. We are looking for a senior machinist who has an interest in working in an automotive engine development test environment. You will be working as a part of our Test Services team.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Providing machining services for prototype mechanical components for ICE engines
  • Fabrication of hardware for mounting components to ICE engines
  • Modification of ICE engine components
  • Understanding mechanical component drawings
  • Demonstrable shop skills in machining with tight tolerances, fabrication using steel and aluminum, use of powered workshop tools in a safe and efficient manner
  • Experience with wielding (not ticketed, basic fabrication) is a nice to have
  • Preventive maintenance of machine shop equipment
  • Maintaining machine shop supplies, tools, materials related to machine shop operations
  • Maintaining preventative maintenance logs and data base, records keeping
  • Operation of forklift and company truck
  • A commitment to safety and excellence in work and organizational habits
  • Other duties as assigned 
  • Health & Safety Responsibilities:

  • Promote Westport’s H&S culture following all Environmental, and H&S procedures and understanding your obligations and responsibilities
  • Report unsafe conditions, behaviors and all accidents
  • Co-operate with JHSC (Joint Health & Safety Committee) and Safety representative
  • Position Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited Machinist trade program, Or Equivalent, Tool & Die/Millwright.
  • 10+ years of manual machining (not CNC) experience
  • Experience in setting up machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, saws, grinding machines
  • Ability to use surface and tool grinding equipment for machine tools, or die making
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering drawings and tolerances (Metric)
  • Experience using precision tools, hand and powered tools to assemble, fabricate, form steel, stainless steel and aluminum
  • Experience in managing machine shop operations (ie. Keeping stock of materials and tooling)
  • Ability to maintain machine tools
  • The following are assets:

  • Experience providing machining services in a R&D Or Tool & Die maker environment an asset
  • Red seal certified trade as a Machinist Or Millwright with extensive high tolerance machining experience preferred
  • An understanding of EDM machining used in precision parts.(KTC-Superdrill) preferred
  •  Aptitude for diagnosing and repairing problems in mechanical systems an asset
  • Physical or other competencies:

  • Ability to lift up to 50kgs
  • Clean driving license
  • Effective interpersonal Skills
  • Strong computer skills are required: MS Office
  • Salary Range

    This role offers a competitive compensation and benefits program including a salary within our hiring range of $75,000 to $85,000. Range is dependent on numerous factors including job location, skills and experience.
