Position Summary
In this full-time position, you will provide engineering and process support for emulsion/asphalt manufacturing at multiple facilities. You will lead various engineering projects including plant modifications, retrofits, and new construction. Your duties will include process design, engineering specifications, budgeting, and project and construction management. You will liaise with maintenance, facility managers, R&D, and quality control. You will report on various operational issues not limited to the production of quality emulsion products.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Define project scopes, budgeting, and scheduling.
- Perform design calculations including but not limited to hydraulic calculations, heat and mass balance, carbon footprint and fuel consumption, equipment, and instrumentation sizing/selection.
- Develop procurement specifications for tanks, pumps, steam boilers, fluid heaters, HX, CV, mixers, etc.
- Generate engineering documents such as P&IDs, PFDs, calculation spreadsheets, datasheets, technical lists (IO, load, equipment, line), control narratives, and commissioning documents.
- Working with the drafting team to develop and review mechanical, civil, process and electrical drawings.
- Manage and coordinate process and 3D model review meetings with other business units.
- Create RFQ construction packages, managing bids and technical bid evaluations.
- Coordination of contractors, construction management and supervision, on-site drawing reviews.
- Perform PSSRs, commissioning and start-up of plant systems, control systems, and equipment.
- Reporting project progress to Engineering Team Lead and VP of Engineering.
- Work with local, provincial, or federal officials to acquire permits required to proceed with projects requiring formal approval including TSSA, hydro/gas/water utilities, site/emissions/building permits, etc.
- Training of plant personnel and assist in updating operating procedures relating to the project.
- Provide timely plant support during peak operating season to minimize downtime (e.g. troubleshooting, coordinating contractors and suppliers, arranging for replacement equipment, and recommending alternate operating procedures to maintain production).
- Provide general engineering support to plant managers, maintenance, and the cross-functional team.
- Travel to plants as required to fulfill duties regarding capital projects, maintenance projects and support.
- Obtain industry best practices and implement them accordingly throughout design.
- Continue developing applicable engineering standards, design templates, and department initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- University Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or a relevant field.
- Registered or eligible to be registered as Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
- 3-5 years of experience in petroleum or heavy industries process plants.
- Project management experience from inception, planning to completion.
- Technical skill focusing on process controls, piping, and tank design.
- Basic knowledge of process equipment sizing and selection.
- Construction and commission experience within heavy process industries.
- Basic knowledge of AutoCad (2D and 3D), and Naviswork.
- Working Knowledge of Microsoft products such as Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, Access, Power BI.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of engineering codes ASME B31.3 and API 650 will be considered as an asset.
- Knowledge of process instrumentation and automation will be considered as an asset.
- Previous experience in Heavy Industries Operation and business units will be considered as an asset.
