Job Description - Mechanical Designer - Automation Machine Build

Join Our Team as an Automation Systems Designer at Johnson Electric!

Location: Ancaster, ON (onsite)
Salary Range: $80K-95K annually
Vacancy Type: Existing position
 

As our next Automation Systems Designer, you’ll be at the forefront of designing and developing innovative production automation solutions. Your expertise in mechanical design and automation systems will be crucial in delivering high‑quality equipment ranging from material handling systems to fully automated assembly and inspection cells.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Design mechanical systems for robotics, automation equipment, gauges, and assembly tooling
• Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to develop automation solutions
• Perform engineering calculations related to materials, forces, and motion systems
• Create detailed drawings, assemblies, and bills of materials using SolidWorks
• Review designs to ensure compliance with safety and customer standards
• Collaborate with electrical and controls teams to integrate automation systems
• Support manufacturing during build, debug, and integration of equipment
• Communicate with customers, vendors, and internal teams on technical requirements and design updates
• Provide time estimates, resource requirements, and progress updates on design activities
• Participate in design reviews and recommend improvements to manufacturing and maintenance processes

What We’re Looking For:

• Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
• 5+ years of experience in automation design or special-purpose equipment
• Strong proficiency in SolidWorks
• Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, pneumatics, and automation principles
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications
• Strong problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude

Bonus Points If You Have:

• Experience with robotic cells and automated assembly systems
• Knowledge of machine shop practices and manufacturing techniques
• Experience mentoring junior designers or co-op students
• Experience developing design standards and contributing to CI initiatives
