Your opportunity:

The Utilities & Building Operations (U&BO) team on the St. George campus is looking for a highly engaged engineering new/recent graduate interested in mechanical building operations and systems, particularly Heating Ventilation and Cooling (HVAC) systems. The U&BO team oversees the daily mechanical operations of more than 120 buildings and a district energy system on a busy downtown campus in the heart of Toronto.

The Mechanical Engineer In Training will be fully immersed into the operations of mechanical building operations. Their primary responsibility will be to support the University initiative, commenced in June 2023, to gather and organize required documents to support outside consultant activities to update HVAC strategy / Operating and Maintenance Plan for normal operation to align with latest ASHRAE standards from the perspective of infection risk management perspective during normal (non-pandemic) and pandemic modes of operation.

They would also be responsible for supporting various activities including system performance and troubleshooting, root cause analysis, field studies, and developing and updating documentation and standards. They will acquire hands on experience in the design and operation of mechanical and plant systems and equipment, building automation systems, problem solving strategies and troubleshooting, process improvement, and data management and analytics.

This role will work under the supervision of the Senior Manager, Mechanical Building Services and will collaborate with all members of the University Facilites and Services team. Subsequently, using the created Building Response Templates, this position will create specific response plans for over 120 existing buildings at St. George Campus. This will include, but not limited to:

  • Preparing project charter for execution of this work
  • Liaison with other stakeholders
  • Gathering and organizing existing documentation
  • Carrying out field surveys to understand and capture building system operations
  • Evaluating the unique aspects of each building, the mechanical systems in place, and the potential challenges and emergencies that may arise
  • Develop operating documentation such as standard operating procedures, check sheets for equipment, and troubleshooting templates to facilitate Building Response process requirements
  • Develop standards for the university’s building controls graphical user interface to improve response to trouble call response, system performance, and operational analysis to facilitate Building Response process requirements
  • Support implementation of ISO 50001 operational aspect of St. George energy management plan
  • Support other activities as required


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Verifying the accuracy and completeness of documents (i.e.,documents vs as built conditions, final deliverables, etc)
  • Reviewing drawings, contract documents and site conditions to capture updates and changes to existing site/building conditions in AutoCAD and/or Revit
  • Analyzing, synthesizing and incorporating information from multiple sources into technical documents
  • Creating and editing a standard operating procedures manual
  • Updating and maintaining a procedures manual
  • Determining logistical details required for project implementation
  • Coordinating meeting schedules, agendas, materials, action and follow-up items
  • Updating and maintaining database records

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience (including time working as a student) in HVAC, plumbing, and other mechanical building services considered an asset
  • Professional and/or academic experience with mechanical equipment and systems, reviewing drawings, specifications, operating manuals and schedules
  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Excellentcommunication, organization, and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently or on a team
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and Word
  • Working knowledge of AutoCad/Revit
  • Working knowledge of Office 365


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Working knowledge of Power BI, Power Automate is considered an asset
