Job Description - Men's Hockey Head Coach

The Men’s Hockey Head Coach is responsible for duties such as athlete recruitment and developing implementing and evaluating the technical and tactical curriculum which prepares the Surge student athletes for successful competition within Ontario Collegiate Recreation (OCR). This position reports to the Manager of Athletics & Student Engagement and receives functional guidance from the Athletics & Student Engagement Coordinators and Engagement Content Designer.

  • Develop and implement program plans (weekly/monthly practice plans and annual plan) for the technical, tactical, and physical preparation of the team and athletes for success in OCR competition.
  • Supervise the team’s volunteer coaching staff, ensuring coaches are fulfilling the practice, game, and recruitment plans.
  • Identify & recruit prospective student-athletes, considering academic success & athletic excellence.
  • Support and mentor the student-athlete’s commitment to academic standing, athletic excellence, leadership, and responsible conduct.
  • Maintain effective communication & administrative systems amongst coaches, players, and athletic staff
  • Positive promotion of the program to alumni and community.
  • Support and act in accordance with the college and department strategic direction, core values and initiatives as they relate to student-athlete support, general promotions, budget management, appropriate administrative responsibilities, and community/alumni relations.
  • Travel with and supervise team on all road trips.
  • Adherence and compliance with St. Lawrence College, Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA), OCR, and Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A minimum of a Valid Advanced Development Coach (ADV) or National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Certification (or working towards).

A minimum of 4 years coaching experience at a competitive level (high school, club and/or College/University levels). Current certification in First Aid and CPR.

Conditions of Employment:

  • A valid and recent Police Background Check obtained by the successful candidate will need to be provided as a condition of employment.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates will require flexible hours regarding travel and various games times for coaching activities.
  • Ability to recruit and retain highly qualified student athletes.
  • Excellent administrative skills and able to meet deadlines and work within a departmental setting.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, leadership, and sportsmanship skills.

The successful incumbent must have the ability to report to the work location.

Salary & Terms

  • Admin Group: In accordance with St. Lawrence College coaching rates.
