Position Summary


Under the direction of the Director of Children and Families, the Mental Health & Wellness Worker will provide counselling and support to individuals and families who are clients of the First Nations Family Advocate Office (FNFAO). The Mental Health & Wellness Worker will provide vital support and assistance to individuals struggling with mental health challenges, helping them navigate their emotions, develop coping mechanisms, and work towards improved overall well-being.


 


Key Responsibilities



  • Provide empathetic and non-judgmental counselling to individuals and families dealing with mental health issues, stress, or emotional challenges.

  • Offer emotional support and actively listen to clients' concerns, providing validation and encouragement.

  • Assist families in educating about mental health disorders, coping strategies, and available resources.

  • Conduct workshops to promote mental health awareness and wellness by incorporating First Nations health and wellness strategies.

  • Plan, facilitate and/or coordinate mental health-related workshops, programs and/or presentations for youth, families, and/or the community using resources and technology (topics in grief and loss, anxiety, ADHD, FASD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Pathways to First Nations health & wellness).

  • Assess and respond to mental health crises with sensitivity and urgency.

  • Collaborate with emergency services and other mental health professionals to ensure clients' safety during crises.

  • Assist clients in accessing appropriate mental health services, therapy, and community resources.

  • Support the advocacy for clients' needs within the healthcare system, social services, and educational institutions.

  • Support clients to develop skills to navigate various support systems effectively.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records, documenting sessions, progress, and interventions.

  • Regularly evaluate clients' progress, adjusting plans as necessary and ensuring goals are met.

  • Provide comprehensive culturally safe based care, knowledge, and support in the areas of mental wellness, addictions, Trauma, sexual abuse, and violence for adults, youth and families.

  • Collaborate with supervisors and team members for case reviews and consultations.

  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with youth, families and/or groups experiencing mental health issues, cognitive disabilities, addiction, and/or personal/interpersonal problems.

  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications: Education & Experience



  • Completion of a college or university program in social work, child and youth care, psychology or other social science or health-related discipline is usually required.

  • Previous work experience in a social service environment as a volunteer or in a support capacity may replace formal education requirements for some occupations in this unit group.

  • Experience working with families navigating the Child and Family Services system is an asset.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Child and Family Services system, policies, laws and regulations, standards, and recent legal and regulatory developments is an asset.

  • Knowledge of First Nation issues related to the child welfare and justice system, and health and social services.

  • Experience working with First Nation children, youth, and families.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Experience facilitating workshops.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and organizational skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Knowledge of management, organizational and planning principles.

  • Ability to follow office procedures and practices.

  • Knowledge of First Nation culture, history, and issues.

  • Able to work flexible hours and travel upon request.

  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.

  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check, and Clear Child Abuse Checks.
