Job Description - Mine Manager

Covia is looking for a dynamic Mine Manager who will have a positive impact on the Mine team the Nepheline Syenite Operation located at the Blue Mountain facility. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Mine Manager will be responsible for the efficient operation of the NSO Mining Operations to meet the ore requirements of the Nephton and Blue Mountain plants in the safest possible manner, and at the lowest cost consistent with quality requirements.


The successful candidate will have the following Key Accountabilities:



  • Provide Safety Leadership through regular safety inspections of Mine, Tailings, Mobile Equipment and Repair Shops, and Haul Road areas.  Assist with Plant and other areas' safety inspections when called upon.  Observe and reinforce safe work behaviours and participate in formal monthly safety meetings.  Promote and act to support a high level of site housekeeping, ergonomic initiatives, reduced employee dust exposure, and Near Hit reporting, among others.  Ensure timely investigation and reporting on all department-related safety incidents.  Ensure compliance with report recommendations to prevent further occurrences.

  • Meet both Plants’ ore supply requirements in the short and long term.  Meet all product quality specifications.  Through supervision of the Mine Supervisors, schedule and direct all mining activities, including stripping, drilling, blasting, haulage, and reclamation.  Through supervision of the Mobile Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, coordinate and schedule maintenance of all Mine equipment.  Maintain labour and safety relations in areas of responsibility.  Administrate two collective bargaining agreements.  Provide daily, weekly, and month-end mining reports to the Director of Operations and Operations Manager as required. Track and present all key performance indicators for the mining operation..



  • Responsible for developing and maintaining short and long-term mine planning. Ensure all environmental regulations are met. Responsible for developing long-range tailings plans.  Manage two tailings facilities and work with other department Managers to supervise the construction, maintenance, and operation of tailings dams.  Prepare and implement long-range reclamation plans.  Handle discipline and first step grievances.  Complete weekly reports.

  • Act as Team Leader on projects requiring a Continuous Improvement team involving the Mine Operation using the philosophy and techniques of continuous improvement, initiate various programs to improve quality, eliminate waste, decrease costs, and improve productivity and other efficiencies. Arrange for on-site contracting of approved projects required in the Mine.  Ensure safe work operations and enforce safety and health rules.  Attend and provide leadership at all department safety meetings.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The successful incumbent will have the following Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering is preferred. Equivalent experience or education will be considered

  • 5+ years of Mining experience in an engineering or management role



  • Proficient use of electronic data collection and computer equipment related to occupational health and safety monitoring and reporting.

  • Strong computer literacy with Microsoft Office suites, regulatory, and safety software programs.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and suitable for preparing reports
