The Opportunity

As a Mining Engineer in Training (EIT) at Conuma Resources, you will gain extensive hands-on, field-based experience through an immersive development program focused on real-world surface mining operations. This role is designed for engineers who want to learn mining from the ground up, spending significant time in the field and working directly alongside experienced engineers, front-line supervisors, equipment operators, and technical specialists.

You will rotate through key operational and technical disciplines, developing strong practical and technical skills while gaining a deep understanding of how a mine operates day to day. From early in the program, you will take on meaningful responsibility, applying engineering principles directly within an active operational environment.

The program emphasizes boots-on-the-ground learning, active participation in daily operations, and mentorship from Professional Engineers as well as experienced operations, technical, and leadership team members. This experience provides a strong foundation for long-term career development across both technical and operational roles within the organization.

This opportunity is well suited for motivated engineers who are curious, adaptable, and eager to learn by doing.

As part of Conuma’s Mining Engineer in Training development program, responsibilities progress with experience, demonstrated capability, and readiness for increased accountability. Mining EITs are expected to take on increasing ownership within active mine operations as their technical and operational competence develops.

Responsibilities vary based on rotational assignments and business needs and may include:

  • Performing operational and technical survey work, including field layout, volume calculations, reconciliation, operation of survey drones (UAVs), and processing and analysis of survey data to support mine planning and operational decision-making.

  • Developing, executing, and adjusting short-range mine plans, dig sequences, and daily production priorities, ensuring plans are practical, safe, and executable in the field.

  • Conducting geotechnical inspections and monitoring, collecting and analyzing data, preparing reports, and supporting the implementation of ground control and risk mitigation measures.

  • Providing hands-on engineering and operational support to front-line supervisors and equipment operators, with increasing accountability for execution, productivity, and safety outcomes.

  • Taking an active role in day-to-day operational decision-making, troubleshooting issues, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Developing leadership, communication, and people-management skills by working directly with crews and supporting supervisors in the planning and execution of daily work.

  • Actively participating in and leading, as appropriate, safety meetings, inspections, audits, and incident investigations, with a strong focus on frontline hazard identification and operational risk management.

  • Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to ensure safe, efficient, and coordinated operations.

  • Managing assigned engineering and operational responsibilities with increasing independence, while receiving mentorship from engineers, supervisors, and site leadership.

  • Documenting work, preparing technical reports, and maintaining records required to support operations and professional development.

  • Building the progressive technical and practical experience required to advance toward Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensure.

  • Other duties as assigned.
