Job Description - Newcomer Youth Advisor


The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick responds to critical social needs in the community and works to provide solutions. Newcomer Connections is a key pillar within the YMCA family. Established in 1993, Y Newcomer Connections is a leading immigrant settlement centre focused on creating connections that will transform our community into a lasting, healthy home for immigrants from around the world, and from all walks of life.


 


POSITION OVERVIEW


The Newcomer Youth Advisor provides extracurricular support to newcomer youth ages 12-19. This position plans and delivers Newcomer Youth Programming, prioritizing leadership development and exposure to Canadian sport and outdoor pursuits. This position works closely alongside School Coordinators/Settlement Workers in Schools and with other YMCA program staff to develop relevant, timely programming and to ensure newcomer youth receive 360-degree support. This position reports to the Community Connections Supervisor.


CORE RESPONSIBILITIES



  1. Plan and deliver Newcomer Youth Programming for youth ages 12-14 and 15-19
        a) Collaborate with YMCA staff to develop programming relating to youth leadership, Canadian sport and outdoor pursuits;
         
    b) Collaborate with YMCA staff to recruit and train volunteers to serve as Program mentors;
         
    c) Collaborate with the Intercultural Competency Trainer to provide necessary staff and community supports respecting cultural 
              awareness and inclusion;


       2. Lead by example and provide strong mentorship and social support to newcomer youth;
       3.
Work to build relationships, trust and confidence among newcomer parents;
       4. Bring forward unique or especially difficult challenges to the attention of staff on other service delivery teams, as relevant;


       5. Connect newcomer youth with extracurricular activities, volunteer opportunities and employment support in the community;
       6.
Support efforts to develop further youth programming across the YMCA, as requested by the General Manager of Newcomer &                                 Community Connections;
       7. Make and support referrals to internal and external community partners for collaboration opportunities for youth (i.e. Camp Glenburn; Y                Lead; Skills Launch Youth Program; Salvation Army Kettle Campaign; etc.);


       8. Collaborate with the YMCA Youth Council to connect newcomer youth with others from across the community; 


       9. In the spring, support School coordinators / Settlement Workers in Schools to coordinate child care / summer camp activities; 


       10. Understand, promote, support and leverage the YMCA Strong Communities Campaign on behalf of newcomer youth;


       11. Understand and leverage P.R.O. Kids funding on behalf of newcomer youth;


       12. Maintain frequent, accurate data entry in iCARE database, CRM and other reporting tools;


       13. Complete regular reports;


       14. Complete monthly expenses;


       15. Attend staff meetings;


       16. Perform other duties as assigned by the GM of Newcomer & Community Connections

     ·   Self manages personal professional development.

Skills and qualifications



  • A Bachelor's Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution

  • Approachable and possessing a strong client-centric attitude

  • Heightened sensitivity to the needs of our immigrant community

  • Exceptional ability to communicate in English with clients whose first language is not English

  • A minimum of 3 years’ work experience in a cross-cultural environment

  • Demonstrated interest or experience working with youth

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills

  • Exceptional organizational and inter-personal skills

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including 2-3 evenings/week and 1 Saturday a month

  • Must be fluent in the English language, knowledge of other languages is a great asset.


 


 


WORKING CONDITIONS


 


·      As a part-time YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick staff person, your hours of work and location may be adjusted due to programming               needs. There is no guarantee of number of hours worked within a work week.


·      The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick has a Joint Health and Safety Committee which meets on a monthly basis to discuss health and             safety within the workplace. Questions or concerns about your workplace must be brought forward to committee members.


·      In this role, you will be required to work in an environment which is often busy with high levels of noise.


·      As a YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick staff person, you are responsible for your own travel to and from work.


·      You are responsible for the member/client’s safety on a daily basis. You will be required to perform first aid and CPR when and if necessary              and you are certified to do so.
