Now Hiring - News Editor at the NAIT Nugget for 2025-26
Are you curious about what’s happening on campus? Do you enjoy digging into the facts and sharing important information with others? The Nugget is looking for a News Editor to lead our coverage of campus events, policies, and student issues. You don’t need to be an experienced journalist—just someone who loves research, values accuracy, and wants to help keep students informed.
What you'll do:
Investigate and report: Stay on top of what’s happening on campus, ask tough questions, and make sure our reporting is thorough and accurate. You’ll get the chance to uncover important issues and hold people accountable, so you should have a passion for justice and the ability to stay objective.
Lead our News section: Oversee coverage in your section, setting the tone and ensuring standards are met. This includes assigning stories to contributors, sending emails, light editing of your section's pieces, and discussing with Senior Editor/Editor-in-Chief any editorial concerns.
Guide contributors: Work with a team of student reporters, helping them refine their storytelling and push their creative boundaries. This includes answering their questions, explaining how the Nugget works, offering support or guidance where needed.
Turn Questions Into Stories: If something doesn’t add up, you’ll find out why. Your curiosity will drive in-depth reporting and fresh angles on campus news. This role requires quick thinking and attention to detail, so you should be ready to make fast decisions without sacrificing quality.
Create compelling content: Responsible for minimum 1 story a week, whether it’s written or digital—openness to multimedia storytelling (appearing in video, podcasts, social media) is a must.
What we're looking for:
You’re a naturally curious person who enjoys asking questions and finding answers however they can. Working in news means prioritizing stories, asking why, and holding people accountable through fair and transparent reporting
You have strong research skills and attention to detail. Some stories require digging, and you should be comfortable seeking out those answers
You’re a great communicator and know how to stay organized. You’ll be the lead of our news section, so you need to be able to interview and lead a variety of people, along with keeping your stories and your contributors’ stories on deadline!
You’re comfortable being a leader and setting the tone for your section. Contributors will look to you for story ideas and guidance. Your Senior Editor and Editor-in-Chief will be there to support you, but we want someone who can take charge and make decisions.
Qualifications:
You’re a current NAIT student enrolled in classes from September 2025-April 2026. This is a part-time, salary position that begins August 1, 2025 and ends April 15, 2026. You must be enrolled in classes in both the Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 terms to be eligible. The salary for this position is $500/month.
