Job Description - Nutritional Educator (Term Contract)

Position Summary


Seabird Island is committed to promoting holistic health and wellness within our community. We are dedicated to creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment that respects and values Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and ways of being. We are seeking a Nutritional Educator to join our team, working collaboratively to support community members in achieving their health goals through nutrition education, meal planning, and culturally appropriate dietary guidance.



Under the direction of the Acting Holistic Nutrition Wellness Lead, the Nutritional Educator provides culturally informed nutrition education, counseling, and meal planning to community members of all ages. This role involves developing individualized nutrition plans, promoting healthy eating habits, and incorporating traditional Indigenous foods and practices into dietary guidance. The Nutritional Educator will also engage in community outreach activities, supporting clients and the broader community through workshops, events, and collaborative health initiatives.



This is a term position ending in August 2026 with possibility to extend.



What You'll Do 


Program Development & Implementation



  • Design, deliver, and evaluate health and nutrition initiatives across the band, ensuring alignment with 
    community needs and organizational goals.

  • Plan, customize, and deliver programs that address the unique needs of community members and 
    other audiences.

  • Monitor program effectiveness through feedback, data collection, and outcome reporting.



Education & Training



  •  Facilitate workshops and educational events in all seven communities on nutrition, wellness, and 
    chronic disease prevention.

  • Deliver nutrition education sessions to students at Seabird Schools, integrating curriculum standards and culturally relevant practices.

  • Teach Food-Safe certification courses and promote safe food handling practices.

  • Provide professional development training for staff and community leaders on nutrition-related topics.



Counselling & Client Support



  • Offer individualized and group counseling sessions to encourage healthy eating habits and sustainable lifestyle changes.

  • Conduct home visits to clients and families with nutritional concerns, including diabetes and chronic disease management.

  • Provide practical education on meal planning, cooking skills, grocery shopping, and food preparation.

  • Deliver follow-up care and ongoing support for clients referred to by physicians or other health professionals.



Traditional & Cultural Food Knowledge



  • Educate individuals and families on healthy food choices and preparation techniques.

  • Promote traditional food knowledge, including cooking, preserving, and sustainable harvesting methods.

  • Collaborate with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to integrate cultural practices into nutrition programming.



Community Outreach & Engagement



  • Lead outreach activities to promote health and wellness across all communities served.

  • Build partnerships with schools, health providers, and local organizations to strengthen nutrition initiatives.

  • Represent the organization at community events, health fairs, and regional forums.



Administration & Compliance



  • Maintain accurate and complete records, forms, and documentation of all services provided.

  • Prepare reports on program activities, outcomes, and recommendations for improvement.

  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, health regulations, and professional standards.

  • Manage program budgets, resources, and supplies efficiently.

  • Stay current with emerging research, trends, and best practices in nutrition and public health.

  • Contribute to grant writing and funding proposals to support program sustainability.

  • Participate in team meetings, strategic planning, and organizational initiatives.



Other Duties



  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.



Working / Special Conditions



  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.

  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.

  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively travel to and from the communities we serve.

  • Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs and schedules of clients and community needs. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule.



What you'll Bring



  • Registration with a recognized professional body (e.g., Registered Dietitian or equivalent) is considered an asset.

  • Bachelors in dietetics, nutrition or a related field is required.

  • Certification in Food-Safe or equivalent food handling training.

  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in nutrition education, counseling, or community health programming.

  • Experience delivering workshops, presentations, and group training sessions.

  • Background in working with Indigenous communities or diverse populations preferred.

  • Demonstrated success in program development, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Strong organizational and record-keeping abilities, with attention to detail.



Preferred:



  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.

  • Experience working with diverse age groups, including youth, adults, and Elders.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.

  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.



Cultural Competes: 



  • Understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.

  • Experience applying culturally safe and trauma-informed practices in counselling settings.

  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
