Have you studied social work, psychology, sociology, or a relevant human services field? Have a Class 5 Non-GDL Alberta License? Do you enjoy helping others and giving back to your community? This is your opportunity to be a part of social change!  Alpha House’s Outreach Program is a leader in street level response to homelessness, addiction, and mental health. We work closely with first responders, Calgary Police Services, other non-profits, and The City of Calgary to provide essential care to vulnerable Calgarians and advocate for an end to homelessness. We are currently hiring for open positions in our various Outreach programs to support those affected by substance use. Learn more about our team to see if this is the right fit for you.

How to apply: In person, with a copy of your resume, proof of education, and Class 5 Alberta Non-GDL Driver's license. All our positions require a valid Vulnerable Sector Search, a two year diploma or degree in a social services related field, and a clear 5-year Alberta Drivers Abstract to be completed prior to employment. 

Please note, we are not able to meet with individuals who attend early or arrive late, interviews are conducted between 4pm-6:30pm. Please also note that due to logistical constraints, we kindly request that you come by yourself, as we do not have accommodations for additional guests.

Pay: $24.95 per hour + benefits 

Hours: 2190 hours annually (7am to 7pm OR 7pm to 7am, 3 days on, 3 days off)

About the Role: 

The Help Team is a 24/7 high intensity Outreach Service that offers transportation and crisis support for street-involved individuals with addiction issues. The HELP team responds to calls from the public, businesses, emergency services (EMS, CPS) and other agencies for situations involving individual(s) on the street in need of non-emergency assistance. The goal of the program is to provide a service that reaches individuals struggling with substance use at the street level, to improve the conditions under which people are living and to address their immediate safety. Your responsibilities would include:

• Acting professionally, empathetically, and respectfully with clients, treating them with dignity.


• Respond to and triage calls from the public, businesses, and stakeholders; provide transportation and assist individuals in and out of the van.


• Provide immediate response to distress or crisis situations.


• Stay aware of community and social services; refer and advocate for individuals as needed.


• Drive an agency van in all weather conditions and conduct sweeps of areas frequented by unhoused individuals.


• Perform administrative tasks, including preparing reports, case notes, and daily stats.


• Maintain excellent relationships with community partners, businesses, and stakeholders.


• Demonstrate knowledge of all policies and procedures and reference them as necessary.


• Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards, including maintaining confidentiality at all times.

About You: 

• 2-year Diploma or Degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Health Sciences, or related field from a publicly funded post-secondary institution (in-progress considered).


• Class 5 Non-GDL AB Driver’s License (Required)


• One year of experience engaging with vulnerable individuals in an Outreach setting (Ideal but not required)


• Comfortable driving a van in all weather conditions with strong street navigation skills.


• Understanding of addictions, including withdrawal management, harm reduction, stages of change, trauma-informed care, crisis management and counseling, and mental health impacts.


• Tolerant, non-judgmental, compassionate, and empathetic towards the homeless and those with addictions or mental health issues.


• Proven crisis management, problem-solving, rapport-building, and advocacy skills.


• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, showing respect, dignity, and discretion while maintaining client confidentiality.


• Team player with strong oral and written English communication skills.


• Diplomacy skills, including conflict resolution, de-escalation, and people management.


• Ethically responsible practices with staff and clients, understanding and appreciating the Protection of Persons in Care Act.
