About the Role
Sparwood Fire Services is a dedicated team led by the Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief, supported by an Assistant Chief, Training Captain, Captains, Lieutenants, and Firefighters. Paid On-Call Firefighters receive continuous training, professional development, and the tools needed to respond effectively to emergencies.

What You’ll Do
As a Paid On-Call Firefighter, you will:
- Assist in providing fire prevention, protection, suppression, and rescue services, including responding to hazardous and emergency situations.
- Participate in regular training, drills, and practice sessions to maintain and enhance your skills
- Ensure the cleaning, servicing, and maintenance of equipment, apparatus, turnout gear, and uniforms
- Support and engage in public education programs and community events, promoting fire safety and building community relationships
Requirements

- Be at least 19 years of age
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
- Reside within the District of Sparwood
- Possess a valid Class 5 non-restricted driver’s license with a safe driving record
- Provide a clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check
- Be in good physical condition and able to successfully complete a physical agility test
- Be capable of performing prolonged, physically demanding work in adverse conditions and inclement weather
- Be available to attend required training sessions and maintain an acceptable attendance record for emergency calls
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
- Interact with the public in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner
Preferred Qualifications (Assets)
- Availability to respond to daytime emergencies
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Possession of a Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 driver’s license, and/or air brake endorsement
- Completion of fire-related courses, such as NFPA 1001 Level II, NFPA 1002, NFPA 472
- Advanced first aid training (e.g., OFA Level 3, EMR, or equivalent)
- Previous firefighting, emergency services, or Mine Rescue experience
Salary & Benefits
Paid On-Call Firefighters are compensated for training practices, emergency response call-outs and scheduled on-call duty shifts.
- Training: $20.03 per hour
- Emergency Response & Duty: $25.15 per hour
In addition, Paid On-Call Firefighters receive a range of benefits, including:

Schedule & Commitment
Firefighters are expected to maintain regular attendance at practices, emergency calls, and required training sessions in order to remain active members of the department
- Practices: Held every Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm
Recruitment Process
Becoming a Paid On-Call Firefighter is a challenging, rewarding, and team-oriented experience. The recruitment process is multi-step, taking place over several weeks and consisting of three stages:
- Application & In-Person Interview
- Background Checks & Documentation
- Physical Fitness & Practical Agility Test
Applicants must be available to complete all stages of the recruitment process, followed by initial onboarding and training events.
