Job Description - Pharmacy Inventory Specialist

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Regulated Pharmacy Technician in both hospital and retail pharmacy
  • Experience in pharmacy inventory management
  • Strong knowledge of medication utilization, pharmacy legislation, and practice standards (NAPRA/OCP)
  • Familiarity with cleanroom operations, dispensing systems, and controlled substances management
  • Proficiency with pharmacy systems (e.g., Epic, Kroll) considered an asset
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to collaborate across teams

Hamilton Health Sciences Pharmacy Services is embarking on an exciting, transformational journey of redefining patient care as we leverage the most advanced technologies to enhance all aspects of delivering highly reliable, safe and quality care. We are a multi-site department offering a wide range of services within inpatient, ambulatory and retail pharmacy services. We have pharmacy facilities at the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre, Hamilton General, McMaster University Medical Centre, St. Peter’s, West Lincoln and other sites as required including Satellite Health Facility. The scope of Pharmacy services also includes three retail pharmacies (Cancer Centre Pharmacy, McMaster Drugstore and General Drugstore). We are a tertiary care center offering a wide range of specialty patient services ranging from neonatal, pediatric, adult, geriatric and palliative care and are collaborators for clinical trials and research. Our services are offered with recently renovated state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities for sterile and non-sterile compounding.

The Retail Pharmacy Departments at Hamilton Health Sciences serve our community, our patients upon discharge from hospital, and our specialized outpatient patient populations to manage drug therapies for positive patient outcomes and are committed to pharmaceutical care. Our approach to patient focused health care empowers our Pharmacists to focus on outpatient pharmacy care delivery while providing opportunities for collaborative participation in hospital and post-hospital care. Working toward integration with the primary care teams, this allows for maximization of the Pharmacists clinical role and provides enhanced Pharmacy Technician roles in drug distribution. 


Reporting to the Pharmacy Business manager, the Pharmacy Inventory & Retail Specialist supports medication inventory operations across all HHS pharmacy sites. This role supports contract‑compliant purchasing, inventory control, auditing, and quality assurance, while collaborating with purchasers, supply chain, vendors, and internal teams to ensure accurate inventory systems and reliable medication supply.

The Specialist works collaboratively with pharmacy staff and relevant stakeholders to facilitate management of backorders, recalls, and product issues, inventory and contract data in Epic and Kroll, and supports system readiness for product or contract changes. The incumbent will work collaboratively with drug information and pharmacy teams for communication of shortages and ensures continuity of supply.

The Specialist will work collaboratively with Pharmacy Leadership and other health care professionals to integrate professional and technical standards and promote safe practices in the Retail Pharmacies at HHS, in alignment with all NAPRA and Ontario College of Pharmacists regulatory standards for Sterile Compounding, Non Sterile Compounding, Narcotic and dispensing practices. In addition, the Specialist will support staff education, training, and annual assessments in Retail Pharmacy, working closely with the Leadership Team to ensure adherence to pharmacy standards.
