Job Description - Pole Buyer

Under the direction of the Okanagan Fibre Manager, the Pole Buyer (Okanagan) is responsible for the day-to-day contact and supervision of pole suppliers and Stella-Jones’ harvest contractors, ensuring that all work is performed in a safe and efficient manner which is consistent with Stella Jones Safety Program, policies and guidelines.

Responsibilites:

  • Educate suppliers and Stella-Jones staff about pole specifications
  • Physically manufacture timber to poles when required
  • Day to day contact with harvest contractors and suppliers
  • Quality Control based on Stella Jones Inc. specifications
  • Communicate regularly with the Fibre Manager, Yard Supervisor and Accounting staff
  • Review and signs off on supplier statements
  • Review outturn quality of wood purchased
  • Ensure proper maintenance of company vehicle
  • Prepare travel expense reports

Assist Okanagan Fibre Manager as directed with:

  • Acquisition and logistical arrangement of pole fibre for production yards
  • Negotiation of purchase price and terms
  • Timber reconnaissance and pole volume estimation in standing timber (Private property, BCTS and other licensees)
  • Supervision and management of Stella-Jones owned or managed timber sales and private land
  • Contract preparation and supervision
  • Nurture business relationships
  • Preparation of fibre supply forecasts
  • Assist Woodlands Department when practical.
  • Perform other duties and participates in Company directives as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Postsecondary Education in Forestry related field or extensive forestry experience
  • 3+ years’ experience in a forestry related position
  • Handle physically demanding bush walking long distances in steep and rugged terrain
  • Negotiating skills – extensive knowledge and proven experience in negotiating the best vendor terms, pricing and market forecasting
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Solid decision making and strong analytical skills
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Detail and results oriented
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office, Access and BlueBee
  • Knowledgeable about harvesting, logging, equipment, hauling and trucking
