Job Description - Port Captain - 6 Month Limited Term

The Seaspan Ferries Port Captain is accountable for the efficient operation of the assigned fleet. Working in collaboration with the Operations team, other Port Captains and HSEQ Department, this role implements and maintains operational policies and safety procedures, making sure the vessels and marine crews are in compliance at all times. This position will require weekend flexibility on a 5 day/week schedule. On a rotational basis, after-hours on-call availability is required. This role also provides leadership in opening communication lines between the corporate office and all seagoing personnel, motivating employee performance and promoting strong team morale. In case of a major incident, this position assumes the role of the Assistant Incident Commander and coordinates necessary emergency response/salvage activities. This position is based in Delta, BC.


Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at Seaspan Ferries Tilbury Terminal.


What you’ll do



  • Oversees and organizes the efficient operation of the assigned fleet, which includes daily problem solving, troubleshooting and complaint handling on operational issues, training and supervision of all seagoingpersonnel, and overseeing and regulating crew overtime and deck ordering.

  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders in scheduling of marine personnel ensuring the crewing levels for the fleet are fulfilled within the boundaries of regulatory requirements and union agreements.

  • Provides leadership in motivating employee performance, which includes conducting employee performance evaluations and providing ongoing training and assessments. Builds strong team morale and opens communication lines between the corporate office and the seagoing personnel.

  • Promotes and ensures workplace safety through ongoing monitoring of company policies and procedures for marine vessels and crews. This includes coordinating operational and occupational safety training for marine crews, attending safety meetings, and providing regular written and verbal communications, onboard visits, and visual checks.

  • Assists in the development of the marine fleet operational policy (MSO-Masters Standing Orders), standard operating procedures (SOP) and safe working procedures (SWP). Implements and maintains the above operating policies and procedures both for the vessels and the marine crews.

  • Prepares the vessels and the marine crews for Transport Canada inspection/ certification. Applicable regulations include Canada Labour Code Part II, Marine Occupational Safety and Health Regulations (MOSH), and all applicable regulations under the Canada Shipping Act.

  • Provides operational expertise and support to other internal departments. Conducts terminal investigation and condition reporting as required (e.g.) new loading facility, new route, new commodity being transported, etc.). Organizes and supervises specialty barge and large project loading and un-loading ensuring all operational health and safety measures are in place.

  • Maintains vessels’ working and safety equipment making sure they are maintained at a high standard.

  • Contributes to the development of vessel supplies budget covering all deck supplies, towing and safety equipment. Authorizes and monitors deck supplies and stores orderings.

  • Assists in the conducting of post-incident investigations and assessments, which may involve property damage and/or personal injury, to determine the root cause of an incident. Provides recommendations and action plans. Follows up to ensure corrective measures are put in place to prevent future incidents.

  • Ensures personnel and gear readiness for emergency and salvage response. Acts as the Assistant Incident Commander during emergency (sinkings, accidents, spills) and salvage response situations.


What you’ll bring



  • Tugboat Masters/ 500t Certificate or equivalent.

  • Masters and/or Senior Officer experience.

  • Minimum 5 years of Shipboard or Marine Operations Management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of relevant Canadian and International marine regulations.

  • Knowledge of the Canada Labour Code and Occupational Safety and Health regulations.

  • Knowledge of the marine industry on the West Coast of North America plus an understanding of West Coast Port and Terminal operations.

  • Good communication and supervisory skills.

  • Self-starter with the ability to work both alone and in a team environment.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to handle emergency response effectively and efficiently. Able to lead and perform under high pressure.

  • Intermediate computer skills.

  • Working outside traditional office hours.

The estimated salary for this position is $103,500 - $126,500. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
