Job Description - Post-Secondary Student Policing Program

The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) is seeking passionate and community-oriented individuals to participate in our Post-Secondary Student Policing Program.



Are you a university or college student who is interested in pursuing a career in policing? Do you want to gain hands-on experience and insight into the world of law enforcement? If so, the New Westminster Police Department is looking for candidates like you to join our Post-Secondary Student Policing Program.



Program Outline


 


The NWPD Post-Secondary Student Policing Program is designed to provide aspiring individuals with a comprehensive understanding of the duties and responsibilities of a police officer. Through this 3-day immersive program, students can engage in various aspects of policing, including the physical attributes, a patrol ride-along, and specialized unit presentations. The program will consist of the following:



Day One: Meet & Greet, Orientation of the NWPD and Hiring Process, ETHOS, POPAT & Fitness Preparation, and Use of Force Discussion & Presentation



Day Two: Team-Building Exercises, Major Crime Unit Case Study, and Police Training Simulations



Day Three: Ride-Along



Important to Note:




  • Day One & Two will run on July 25 & 26, 2025, between 08:00 a.m. and 04:00 p.m.

  • We will schedule the Ride-Along for a shift in July, August, or September 2025, depending on candidate availability

  • All applicants will be provided an opportunity to book a POPAT session at a later date (if desired)

You will have experience and success in many of the following areas:


 



  • You are at least 19 years of age or older

  • You are a post-secondary student nearing graduation or recently graduated (within 1 year)

  • You have a passion for pursuing a career in policing with a strong commitment to public service and safety

  • You can pass a criminal record check

To apply for the NWPD Post-Secondary Student Policing Program, please submit your resume and a one-page letter outlining your interest and reasons for wanting to participate in the program. Qualified candidates will be selected for an interview. Of note, proof of age and proof of post-secondary enrollment or graduation will be required during the selection of eligible candidates.

Hours of Work:  This program will run on July 25, 2025 and July 26, 2025, between the hours of 08:00 a.m. and 04:00 p.m.


Cancellation Policy: We kindly ask for a minimum of 72 hours’ notice if you are selected to participate and are no longer able to attend. We will be documenting attendance. Please be considerate of those on the waitlist.
