Position Summary The Prenatal Coordinator is responsible to educate new parents of the Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program within an Indigenous Health and Wellness Framework. Qualifications Degree or Diploma in Health Field, Nursing, Social Work or a comparable Human Services Degree or Diploma with experience in Pre and post natal education. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Preferred Experience working in an Indigenous organization. Ability to speak Ojibway, Oji-Cree or Cree.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Current experience in working with children and families within the Community Health or Social Services sectors. Experience with pre and postnatal care, labour and delivery and Breastfeeding. Administrative experience in community-based service delivery. Experience in developing proposals and health program policies. Knowledgeable of Indigenous culture and an understanding of current health issues affecting Indigenous people. Ability to work independently, demonstrating initiative, with limited supervision. Demonstrated ability in group facilitation, and conflict resolution Demonstrated ability in problem solving and ethical decision-making. Excellent organizational, time, and general management skills. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Responsibilities Help to improve the health of pregnant women, new mothers, and their babies, who face challenges that put their health at risk, for example: Poverty, Teen pregnancy, Social and geographic isolation, Substance use & Family violence.
Participate in the planning, implementation, evaluation and strategic direction of Prenatal Nutrition and Support Program. Providing programs/support to include Nutrition counselling, Prenatal vitamins, Food support, Food preparation training, Counselling in prenatal health and lifestyle, Breastfeeding education and support, Education and support on infant care and child development and Referrals to other agencies and service. Provide direct service and support to Indigenous women in areas such as home visits, hospital visits, post-natal care and breast-feeding practices Work from a holistic perspective, utilizing the teachings of the medicine wheel and Seven Grandfather Teachings. Utilize Elders for teachings, healing and guidance. Take personal responsibility to increase sensitivity, awareness and implementation of Beendigen’s cultural teachings and organizational practices in both professional conduct and work-related deliverables. Maintain a multidisciplinary model for service delivery that supports the Health Canada framework for Prenatal Nutrition and Support Programs and addresses the specific needs of the Indigenous community. Ensure that the program compiles with the organization’s philosophy, goals and objectives. Prepare reports and statistics as required by Health Canada and the Organization. Provide relevant program information to the Indigenous community. Plan, develop, manage and evaluate the program regularly. Work with other agencies in organizing and coordinating programs. Constructively participate in all staff and team meetings, seminars and training sessions as required. Adhere to all policies and procedures and ensure adherence to program best practices. Ensure Health and Safety compliance in the workplace by following policies, procedures and best practices and reporting any unsafe environments. Follow confidential handling of client information as dictated by Privacy Legislation. Preserve confidentiality of all residents, clients, staff, students, volunteers and agency information. Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times. Responsibilities – Public Relations: Promotes Beendigen at all times, when networking and events. Develop community partnerships and relationships. To adhere to professionalism in always representing the organization Maintain excellent communication.
Expected Standards of Performance Adhere to the Policies and Procedures as set by Beendigen. Leads and models expected behaviors as outlines in the Policies and Procedures of Beendigen. Representation on committees as required for the enhancement and benefits of Beendigens programs. To network and promote Beendigen and all Beendigen related programs. Maintain excellent communication. Always maintain professionalism. Adherence to the Code of Ethics and positive relationship building. The completion of functions outlined in the description and the achievement of goals set to a high level. Regular attendance and conduct at work according to the requirements of the Beendigens Policies and Procedures. Participate in the management On-Call rotation. Submit reports to the Executive Director.

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Authority To execute duties and responsibilities outlined in the job description. Accountability The Program Manager will be accountable to the Executive Director for the proper completion of the functions outlined in the job description.
Working Conditions Prenatal Coordinators usually work in group settings and in an office. The Mission of the organization may sometimes take them to non-standard workplaces.
The Prenatal Coordinator is based at the Healing our Own Counselling Unit located on Golf Links Rd; however, all employees may be required to work across other sites from time to time. The Prenatal Coordinator works a flexible work week of 35 hours, Monday to Friday.
Ontario Health and Safety (OH&S) All employees are required to carry out their duties in a manner that does not adversely affect their own health and safety and that of others by reporting all potential hazards; and all incidents and injuries; as well as co-operating with any measures introduced in the workplace to improve OH&S.
Employment is subject to: • Must provide a successful Police Records Check (Vulnerable Sector) • Must be willing to work flexible hours of work (35 hrs/wk) • Must have a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license, use of an automobile and appropriate insurance coverage is required • Must sign Oath of Confidentiality • Must have First Aid CPR & AED Level C Certification • Must have Ontario Safe Food Handler Certification • Must have use of a working cellular device and be able to download and use work required applications. • Must be fully Covid Vaccinated or have an exemption.
