About the Program

SD33 is a substance use prevention program in Chilliwack funded by the School District, to supplement the Prevention & Health Promotion program in the middle schools. The goal of the program is to provide meaningful information to students to help youth make healthy lifestyle choices and decisions about substance use.

Hours & Conditions of Work

• Regular Part Time


• 20 hours weekly


• Base of operations at our Hocking St. location in Chilliwack, but primarily this role works within SD33 Middle Schools (AD Rundle and Chilliwack Middle).


• Working Hours: 4 days per week, 5 hours per day, with the majority of the work being between the hours of 9:00am-3:30pm

Position Summary

The Facilitator is a member of our larger Chilliwack Addiction and Prevention program (CAPS), as well as being connected with our Prevention and Health Promotion program in Surrey, Delta and Langley school districts. The primary role of the Facilitator is to engage in one-to-one supports, provide meaningful and accurate information about substance use, and promote healthy lifestyle choices and activities.

The Facilitator will identify strengths and needs in the school community around the theme of substance use, and work collaboratively with the school to develop goals and strategies that reinforce strengths and resilience. Creating a safe and therapeutic space is a priority for this position.

Responsibilities

• Provides one-to-one supports to youth – including intake, assessment, orientation and development of service goals


• Acts as a positive role model and assist youth in developing values of honesty, self-assertiveness, and respect for others, and a lack of dependency on substances


• Develops, implements, and facilitates and/or co-facilitates group sessions with school staff or other members of the PCRS youth team


• Collaborates with the school and district to provide workshops, large health promotion events and after school programming as determined by community needs


• Participates in and attend working groups, committees, agency and school district meetings


• Maintains administrative duties and follows PCRS policies and procedures

Competencies & Knowledge

• Experience working in alcohol and substance use prevention or intervention


• Ability to form strong therapeutic working relationships with youth


• Solid understanding of the impacts of colonization on our First Nations people


• Sound judgement and effective interpersonal skills


• Clear communication skills, verbal and written


• Trauma-informed practice and suicide intervention training


• Ability to create a safe and therapeutic space for youth


• Sound knowledge of the Chilliwack area and its resources


• Additional training in:


• Motivational interviewing


• Solution focused counselling


• Mental health training


• Sexual abuse training


• Concurrent Disorders
