Job Description - Pride Community Centre (PCC) Events and Advocacy Volunteer

Term: September 1 - April 30


Supervisor: PCC Coordinator & Volunteer and Training Coordinator 


Remuneration: Volunteer


Hours: Variable - Approx 2 - 4 hours per week



The Pride Community Centre is a service of the McMaster Students Union. We provide a contact point for McMaster students that may identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or any of the other diverse identities that make up our community. We offer educational programming and access to resources of interest, as well as peer support and a physical space for students to meet and socialize with each other. As advocates for gender & sexual diversity, the PCC’s mandate upholds that LGBTQ+ students are entitled to a safe and supportive campus, absent of homophobia and transphobia, where the expression of one’s gender & sexual identity is welcomed and respected.



The Events and Advocacy
Committee is responsible for creating and implementing programming and events that include, but are not limited to, community building events, socials, sexual health events, educational events, and athletics events. The ideal candidate is passionate about 2SLGBTQIA+ community building, and
is knowledgeable about queer health.
 


 


The Events and Advocacy Volunteers will work with the Events Coordinators and/or the Social and Political Advocacy Coordinator to plan and execute events and advocacy initiatives dependent on the interests of each volunteer. This programming will be predicated on an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and intersectional framework. Note that this volunteer may also hold a position as peer support volunteer in addition to this position. 




Responsibilities




    • Assist the Events and Programming Coordinator to design and implement events
      and workshops
       



    • Work within an anti-oppressive framework when designing campaigns 



    • Support and participate in
      PCC
      events 
       



    • Help facilitate events and workshops as needed 



    • Responsible for helping promote campaigns, workshops, and events on social media channels 



    • Attend and actively participate in committee meetings as scheduled by providing ideas and contributing to research of all events and campaigns run by the PCC. 



    • Maintain strong communication with the Events and
      Programming Coordinator, Social and Political Advocacy Coordinator, and the Volunteer and Training Coordinator
       



    • Other duties as assigned by the Events
      Coordinators, or the Social and Political Advocacy Coordinator.
       



    • Provide feedback on the service and its events, campaigns, and workshops 



    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



    • Awareness and understanding of PCC’s mandate and of topics associated with the PCC (ie. cissexism, transphobia, heteronormativity, homophobia, racism, ableism, intersectionality, safe(r) space, and 2SLGBTQIA+ identities)
      is an asset
       



    • Interpersonal skills to interact with students and community members at events/workshops and committee meetings 



    • Communication skills 



    • Ability to work effectively with a team and as an individual  



    • Ability to follow instructions 



    • Ability to challenge dominant views, and open to learning and un(learning) 



    • An understanding of the Safe(r) Space 



    • Being aware of 2SLGBTQIA+ and Mental Health resources on campus and the surrounding Hamilton area. 



    Effort & Responsibility




      • Effort required to integrate various individuals and on campus groups to ensure an inclusive environment during all events and campaigns 



      • Effort to think creatively  



      • Responsible for participating in events as  




        Working Conditions



        • Shared office space 



        • Time demands may exceed stated hours of work, particularly preceding major events and activities  




          Training and Experience




            • Previous experience working in an anti-racist, anti-oppressive environment is an asset 



            • Interest in event/workshop planning is an asset 


             


            Equipment



            • Use of Personal Computer
