Job Description - QSET - Rover Manufacturing Lead

The Queen's Space Engineering Team (QSET) is a large multi-disciplinary team consisting of students from all engineering disciplines, in addition to the Faculty of Arts and Science. QSET designs a prototype Mars Rover for participation in the University Rover Challenge (for more information please visit urc.marssociety.org/home).

If selected as the Manufacturing Lead, you will work with the rover management team and rover system leads and take on a greater responsibility for the design review, manufacturing (ie, machining, working with manufacturing vendors), and acceptance of mechanical components of the rover. The successful applicant will work closely with the Rover CTO and the technical managers to ensure that parts are feasible to manufacture, and then work as an interface between the designers and QSET members who will be working to manufacture parts in the various University machine shops. To keep updated with the mechanical components of the rover and to be an aid to these projects the Manufacturing Lead must attend the rover system meetings which will occur sequentially on Rover Sunday/Saturday. The rover management team will be at each of these meetings helping both in technical and managerial capacity.

  • Attend rover system meetings and be an aid to mechanical projects which will occur sequentially on Rover Sunday/Saturday.
  • Develop and maintain manufacturing workflows (CNC, water jet, sheet metal, composites).
  • Schedule machine time, tooling, and supplier turnaround to meet project deadlines.
  • Track part non conformance's and drive root cause corrective actions.
  • Coach new team members with shop equipment, GD\&T, and quality protocols.
  • Critical thinking and decision making, with a passion for engineering and design.
  • Effective communication and time management skills.
  • Interest in machining or fabrication and eagerness to learn new techniques.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to part quality and shop safety.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM workflows and basic GD\&T concepts.
  • ILC and McLaughlin shop training and experience is an asset
  • Experience coordinating projects or working with external vendors is an asset.
