QSET - Rover Mechanical Chassis Lead

The Queen's Space Engineering Team (QSET) is a large multi-disciplinary team consisting of students from all programs within Quenen’s University. QSET designs a prototype Mars Rover for participation in the University Rover Challenge (for more information please visit urc.marssociety.org/home).

If selected as the Mechanical Chassis Lead, you will lead the mechanical design and continuous improvement of the rover chassis, with the goal of designing a stiff, lightweight mast that conforms to URC requirements. The successful applicant will work closely with the Rover CTO and the technical managers to coordinate designs between subsystems, as well as delegating tasks to mechanical members. To keep up-to-updated with the project, the Mechanical Chassis Lead must coordinate and attend weekly meetings with the chassis team and larger rover subsystems team. The rover management team will be at each of these meetings helping both in technical and managerial capacity.

• Prototype alternative mast concepts (foldable, telescoping).
• Coordinate shock mounts and isolation for delicate instruments.
• Maintain drawing packages and BOMs for manufacturing.
• With the help of the rover management team run weekly chassis meetings with general members, working towards furthering the state of the chassis system.

• Critical thinking and decision making, with a passion for engineering and design.
• Effective communication and time management skills.
• Enthusiasm for collaborating with antenna, camera, and payload teams on mounting solutions.
• Familiarity with structural analysis (static or modal) in any FEA package.
• Understanding of the basic principles of mechanical design (failure modes, material selection, design by user requirements, etc.).
