Job Description - Recreation Coordinator

The Tla’amin Nation is a modern, forward thinking, self-governing nation located on the beautiful upper Sunshine Coast (qathet Region).


 


Position Summary


Job Type:              Full-time, permanent


Hours of Work:     Monday – Friday, 9:00 – 5:00 with some evenings & weekend work (based on program needs)


Reporting to:         Recreation Manager


Department:         Community Services



The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of community recreation and sport programs & services to advance the strategic goals of the Comprehensive Nation Plan. The successful candidate will strive to ensure Tla’amin Nation is a healthy, thriving, self- determining, and culturally strong Nation that respects our people, water, lands and resources and embraces ʔəms taʔow (our teachings) in all that we do while creating a vision of One Heart, One Mind, One Nation.


 


Key Responsibilities


Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin policies, standards, practices, and procedures as directed by the Recreation Manager. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to members, clients, employees, and general matters of the Nation.


 


Recreation Program Coordination



  • Plan, direct program, implement, and oversee all facets of recreation related programs and services for čičuy (children) 5 – 9 years of age, Adults, Elders & Fitness for the Tla’amin Nation.

  • Identify, evaluate and manage the risks associated with the delivery of programs, services and activities.

  • Advocate for indigenous representation in sports, arts, school, government by creating opportunities for indigenous people to enhance leadership skills and experiences.

  • Supervise the daily activities of casual Recreation Workers and other contract instructors. Assist with program delivery as required.

  • Engage volunteers for appropriate program activities using established volunteer management practices.

  • Develop and sustain program-based relationships with internal/external stakeholders, e.g. Culture Department, Powell River Library and the Recreation Complex.

  • Ensure program evaluation framework is implemented throughout programs, including a reporting out process to identify opportunities, capabilities, and community needs.

  • Provide input and recommendations with regard to existing or proposed programs.

  • Encourage and increase awareness and engagement in program activities.

  • Assist with the advertising and promotion of recreation programs and services.

  • Assist with special events or other community activities as requested.



Administration



  • Assists Recreation Manager with monitoring program budgets.

  • Assists Recreation Manager with research and identifying potential funding sources to support initiatives related to recreation programs. Prepare grant applications for the delivery of programs and services.

  • Maintain records and activity reports related to programs and events i.e. participation, feedback from participants, and summary of costs.

  • Maintain inventory of recreation equipment and supplies and ensures any equipment maintenance requirements are met.

  • Prepare written reports as required.


Other related duties as assigned.


 


Qualifications


Training, Education, Experience



  • Post-secondary diploma program in Recreation, Physical Education, Sports Management or another related field. (A degree in recreation, kinesiology or related field is preferred) combined with a minimum of 2 years of experience working in a recreation role. Some experience supervising the work of others is an asset.

  • Experience working with or within an Indigenous community.

  • Acceptable Police Information Check with vulnerable sector screen.

  • Valid certificate in Basic First Aid and CPR level C, or willing to obtain within 3 months of hire.

  • Valid B.C. Class 4 Driver’s License, or a Class 5 with willingness and ability to obtain Class 4 within 3 months of hire.

  • Acceptable driver’s abstract.



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities



  • Ability to design, deliver and assess effective recreation programing for people of all ages that are culturally aligned.

  • Strong project coordination and organizational skills

  • Physical fitness at a level to lead various recreational activities.

  • Ability to promote and market programs and events to maximize participation.

  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with members, partner agencies, volunteers, and co-workers.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to write reports.

  • Excellent client service skills. Friendly, positive, responsive, professional and helpful.

  • Ability to provide direction and supervision to front line staff and volunteers.

  • Able to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision as well as working within a collaborative team framework.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities with the ability to adjust priorities and multi-task as needed in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to facilitate group activities.

  • Intermediate computer skills including MS Office Suite.



Working Conditions


Work is performed in a variety of office and community settings. Evening and weekend work may be required. Occasional travel to attend meetings or training is required.
