Referrals Coordinator (Term Contract)

Position Summary

We are seeking a Referrals Coordinator to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance the management and response to land and resource referrals, ensuring that Seabird Island Band’s interests are represented in government and industry consultations.

Under the direction of the Inter-Government Affairs, the Referrals Coordinator provides culturally informed analysis and recommendations on land and resource referrals impacting Seabird Island Band and its members. This role involves reviewing and assessing referral documents, liaising with government agencies and external stakeholders, preparing reports, and ensuring that consultation processes align with Indigenous rights and interests. The Referrals Coordinator will also engage in community relations activities to support informed decision-making and advocacy efforts on behalf of Seabird Island Band.

This is a term contract with an end date of March 31st 2026.

What you'll do 

Referrals

• Receive, Record, and track all incoming referrals addressed to Seabird Island Band


• Create report on all the referrals received in the prescribed manner and send it to the reviewing committee.
  


• Acknowledge receipt of the referral as per the given template to the proponent
  


• Ensure that government referrals align with the cultural values and needs of the First Nations community and comply with relevant regulations.
  


• Enter referrals onto a database.
  


• Compile referrals as per the different categories and provide demographics.
  


• Setup calendar appointments for review of the referrals.
  


• Create and maintain a filing system for all the referrals.
  


• Attend meetings, take notes or minutes of meetings and distribute to the relevant groups.
  


• Communicate with the Referrals Committee with regards to tracking
  


• Draft responses to outside agencies and industry proponents
  


• Work collaboratively with the Lands Department

Other Duties 

• Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
  

What you bring 

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required, Business Administration certification would be an asset.


• 2-3 years’ of office management and clerical experience
  


• Knowledge of Seabird Island Traditional Territory an asset
  


• Knowledge of Seabird history and culture an asset
  


• Knowledge of Land Codes an asset
  


• Experience in creating and maintain filing systems.
  


• Ability to balance competing priorities, multitask, and to work under pressure.

Working / Special Conditions 

• Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
  


• Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
  


• Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively engage and support projects, work, and initiatives

Preferred:

• First Nations candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.


• Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.


• Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.


• Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.


• Excellent writing, editing, charting and verbal communication skills

Cultural Competency:

• Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
  


• Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
  


• Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
