About the South General Medicine Unit

We are a -bed general medicine unit dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions. Our patients range from individuals diagnosed with simple pneumonia to those with complex acute and chronic illnesses. This diverse patient population offers opportunities to acquire specialized knowledge in respiratory medicine, oncology and palliative care, pain management, geriatrics, and wound and skin care. Affiliated with various academic institutions, including the University of Toronto, our unit is committed to continuous learning and professional development, making it an ideal environment for nurses to grow and excel.

In this role you will:

  • Apply the nursing process in the provision of holistic patient and family-centered care
  • Provide comprehensive and accurate documentation of assessments, care provision, and evaluations
  • Anticipate, recognize, and address rapidly changing situations.
  • Provide health education to patients and their families using effective teaching strategies
  • Provides direct patient care in accordance to the CNO standards and Sinai Health's policy and procedures
  • Administer medications and provide any necessary care (including, but not limited to wound care, IVs, monitoring drains, getting patients ready for procedures)
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, pharmacists, social workers, clinical nurse specialists, etc.
  • Apply a broad range of nursing skills and procedures including (but not exclusive to) CADD pumps, chest tubes, nephrostomy tubes, complex wounds, central lines, enteral feeding tubes, TPN, CIWA monitoring, managing a Code Blues, and chemotherapy
  • Participate in the mentoring of learners, peers and other regulated and unregulated health professionals
  • Advocates and contributes to safe discharge and transition planning
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
  • Job Requirements

    Job Requirements:

    Mandatory

  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Graduate of a CNO-approved bachelor’s degree in nursing program, or equivalent combined education and experience
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate

  • Preferred

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN). Applicants in their final year or near completion will be considered
  • Previous clinical experience working with patients with acute and chronic illnesses
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development evidenced by membership in professional organizations, CNA certification, etc.
  • Previous experience or involvement in process improvement initiatives

  • Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent critical thinking, analytical, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively and independently under stressful conditions and within a team
  • Highly adaptable to change and innovation with demonstrated change management experience preferred
  • Ability to work with electronic health record system
