The Property Field Appraiser plays a crucial role in the claims department, overseeing the assessment, estimation, and bid/tender process for large losses. This role involves attending loss sites to meticulously scope, document damage, and write estimates for building repairs. The Property Field Appraiser is responsible for reviewing all building estimates submitted to ensure cost appropriateness and adherence to Estimating standards. Timely completion of estimate reviews and clear, accurate, and professional communication with internal and external customers are paramount. Additionally, the Property Field Appraiser records all estimate deviations, tracks vendor trends, and reports issues to the Vendor Performance Specialist and/or Claims Performance Manager. Participation in large loss committee meetings may be to provide valuable insights on industry/market trends and cost analysis. This Appraiser will also complete remote estimating when to support the claims adjusters in delivering timely claims resolution. 


Job Responsibilities: 


Property Appraisal



  • Conduct on-site inspections of fire-damaged residential and commercial buildings to assess the extent of damages, evaluate the overall condition, and estimate repair or replacement costs. 

  • Prepare detailed property appraisal reports outlining the scope of damages, recommended repairs, and estimated costs. 

  • Provide excellent customer service by promptly addressing inquiries, concerns, or escalations related to property appraisals and repair recommendations. 


Estimation and Cost Analysis



  • Utilize industry-standard methods and tools to accurately estimate the cost of repairs or replacement for fire-damaged properties. 

  • Analyze and evaluate cost estimates to ensure they are reasonable, accurate, and reflective of local market conditions. 

  • Collaborate with the claims team to ensure fair and accurate claim settlements, maintaining


Total Loss Evaluation and Tendering



  • Assess fire-damaged properties to determine if they qualify as total losses, considering factors such as structural integrity, safety concerns, and repair feasibility. 

  • Prepare and submit tenders for total losses, ensuring compliance with company guidelines, policies, and legal requirements. 


Technical & Industry Knowledge – Building Code and Regulatory Compliance



  • Stay updated on local building codes, regulations, and zoning requirements relevant to property repairs or replacements. 

  • Ensure that appraisal recommendations and cost estimates align with applicable codes and regulations. 

  • Stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and advancements in construction materials, methods, and building technologies relevant to property appraisal and repair. 

  • Continuously enhance technical skills and knowledge through training, professional development, and participation in industry conferences or seminars. 


Documentation and Reporting



  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of property appraisals, findings, repair recommendations, and cost estimates. 

  • Prepare accurate and detailed reports summarizing appraisal outcomes, repair options, and cost breakdowns for claims processing and settlement purposes. 


Communication, Negotiation and Vendor Management



  • Work closely with claims adjusters, underwriters, and other stakeholders to gather necessary information, clarify requirements, and address any concerns or questions related to property appraisals. 

  • Effectively communicate appraisal findings, repair recommendations, and cost estimates to internal teams and external stakeholders. 

  • Collaborate with the claims team to ensure fair and accurate claim settlements, maintaining a balance between cost control measures and policyholder satisfaction.

  • Collaborate with contractors, vendors, and suppliers to obtain accurate cost estimates, negotiate pricing, and ensure quality workmanship for repairs or replacements. 

  • Provide feedback to the Vendor Management Office to support continuous improvement and maintain high standards of quality and cost control. 


What you need to Succeed: 



  • 3-5 years experience with P&C property insurance claims. 

  • 5+ years experience in restoration contracting. 

  • 5+ years experience with large loss adjusting.

  • Trade Certification & Quantity Surveyor designation is nice to have. 


Work Arrangement: This role is a remote field position assigned to a territory servicing the Lower BC region (Vancouver and Fraser Valley area), with ongoing access to a company vehicle. You will be required to attend our Vancouver office once or twice per month for meetings and townhalls as needed.


Salary Range: The salary range for this role is $57,000 - $105,500 base salary.
