As a Virtual Safety Monitoring Technician, you’ll play an important role in supporting patient safety through continuous remote observation and communication. You’ll monitor patients with identified safety concerns and respond quickly to changes in behaviour or condition. Using telemonitoring technology, you’ll provide reassurance, assistance, and timely communication while helping clinical teams address emerging concerns. The role requires strong observation, critical thinking, and de-escalation skills, particularly when working in high-pressure situations. You’ll collaborate closely with interprofessional healthcare teams to support safe, timely, and patient-centred outcomes. You’ll also contribute to patient assessment, accurate documentation, and continuous improvement of the virtual monitoring program. This is a fast-paced opportunity for a compassionate, technology-comfortable professional who can remain focused while managing multiple patients simultaneously.

Accountabilities

  • Remotely monitor patients using advanced telemonitoring technology to promote safety, well-being, and continuity of care.

  • Maintain continuous observation of patients with identified safety concerns and promptly recognize changes in behaviour, condition, or risk.

  • Communicate virtually with patients to provide reassurance, support, assistance, and appropriate direction.

  • Communicate significant changes or concerns to the appropriate clinical teams and escalate issues promptly when required.

  • Collaborate with interprofessional healthcare teams to support timely intervention, de-escalation, and resolution of patient safety concerns.

  • Complete accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation of patient observations, communications, and interactions.

  • Support the assessment and triage of patients to determine their suitability for the Virtual Safety Monitoring program.

  • Monitor and manage multiple priorities effectively, including the ability to observe up to 12 patients simultaneously.

  • Use Microsoft Office and other digital platforms confidently to support daily monitoring, communication, and documentation activities.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on patient safety, program development, innovation, and service quality.

  • Maintain a calm, professional, compassionate, and patient-centred approach when interacting with patients and families remotely.

Requirements

  • Secondary School Diploma is required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in health sciences or a related field is preferred.

  • 2–4 years of experience in customer service, patient-facing, or other front-facing roles is required.

  • 1–3 years of previous experience working in a healthcare environment is preferred.

  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families, and clinical teams.

  • Excellent observation skills and exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to identify subtle changes in behaviour or condition.

  • Strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and prioritization skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to assess risk, determine when escalation is necessary, and respond appropriately to changing situations.

  • Strong conflict-management, crisis-management, and de-escalation capabilities.

  • Calm, empathetic, compassionate, and patient-focused approach, particularly when supporting individuals experiencing distress or challenging situations.

  • Strong technological aptitude and the ability to quickly learn and navigate multiple software and telemonitoring platforms.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and other workplace technology.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and remain focused in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of an interprofessional healthcare team.

  • Demonstrated commitment to patient- and family-centred care, continuous learning, and professional development.

  • Previous experience with Meditech is considered an asset.

  • Training or certification in Gentle Persuasion Approach (GPA), Dementia Ability Methods, P.I.E.C.E.S., or Crisis Prevention Intervention is considered an asset.

  • Additional language skills relevant to the communities and patient population served are considered an asset.

  • Willingness and ability to work variable day, evening, and night shifts, including weekends and statutory holidays.

  • Opportunities for ongoing professional development and continuing education.

  • Collaborative work with interprofessional healthcare teams.

  • Inclusive workplace committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, accessibility, and respectful patient care.

  • Opportunity to support diverse patient and family communities across Ontario.

  • Variable shift scheduling with 8- and 12-hour day, evening, and night shifts, including weekends and statutory holidays.

  • Remote monitoring work environment focused on technology-enabled patient support.
