Job Description - Safety Advisor

We’re not just in the business of moving dirt — we’re building the foundations that communities and industries rely on. From heavy civil construction to mining services, MacKay Contracting Ltd. delivers complex projects safely, responsibly, and with pride. Safety isn’t a department here — it’s how we work. We’re looking for a Safety Advisor who shares that mindset and is ready to be a visible, trusted presence in the field and the office.

We are currently recruiting for this position with an estimated project start of mid-September.

How You’ll Contribute

As our Safety Advisor, you’ll play a critical role in protecting our people and ensuring compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation across our projects. You’ll act as the key liaison between site teams, management, and clients, helping ensure that safe work plans, hazard analyses, and procedures are not just in place — but actively followed. Your work will directly support injury prevention, regulatory compliance, and a strong safety culture across our operations.

What You’ll Get to Do

  • Implement and monitor all relevant HSE procedures across project sites

  • Ensure regular safety meetings occur, with completed agendas and meeting minutes

  • Conduct safety orientations for all new employees in accordance with company and site-specific HSE requirements

  • Research, schedule, and track employee training to ensure certifications remain current and avoid lapses

  • Ensure emergency response plans are in place and that employees are aware of procedures

  • Prepare and submit safety reports to the Director of EOHS, Site/Construction Managers, and Project Managers

  • Keep work procedures and practices current with evolving regulations and legislation

  • Stay informed on industry changes and emerging safety trends

  • Participate in internal and external audits and monitor the closeout of corrective actions

  • Identify unsafe conditions and practices and provide practical recommendations for improvement

  • Coach and support field personnel in achieving a safe and healthy workplace

  • Maintain an expected balance of approximately 50% field time and 50% office time

  • Deliver and support training related to working at heights, fall protection, cranes, rigging, confined space, and ground disturbance activities

  • Take on additional duties as assigned in support of the safety program

Who You Are

You’re approachable, detail-oriented, and confident stepping into both the field and the boardroom. You know how to enforce safety expectations while building trust with crews. You’re proactive, organized, and calm under pressure — the kind of person people call before something becomes a problem.

You have:

  • A minimum of three years of health and safety experience in the mining and/or construction industry

  • A Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety

  • Construction Safety Officer (CSO) certification or a professional designation such as CRSP

  • CSTS 2020 certification

  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven experience writing safety policies and procedures

  • Experience with data analysis and safety statistics reporting

  • Strong time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills

  • The ability to coach, mentor, and influence others

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams

  • Working knowledge of a safety management information system

  • The ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities

What’s In It for You

  • This role is based on site on our Sparwood project

  • A balanced mix of field and office work — no being stuck behind a desk or permanently in steel-toes

  • Competitive compensation, ongoing training, and opportunities to grow with a well-established and respected contractor

  • A team that genuinely values safety and backs it up with action
