Job Description - School Counsellor

Job Description Title: School Counsellor


Reports to: Deputy Head of School 


Status: Full-time, Permanent


Start date: August 21, 2025



Scope 


The School Counsellor will play a vital role in supporting the well-being of students, across all grade levels, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. This individual will work alongside with our current Counsellor and collaborate closely with school leadership, including Principals, Associate Principals, and Post-Secondary Counsellors, to ensure a comprehensive and holistic approach to student wellness.
By working proactively with educators and families, the Counsellor will help create a positive, inclusive, and supportive school environment that prioritizes mental health, emotional resilience, and personal development for all students. 



 


Primary Duties and Responsibilities 



  • Plans collaboratively with students, their families, teachers, administrators and community agency personnel to develop effective strategies to promote the educational, wellness, social, and emotional development of students (JK-12)

  • Provides a continuum of services of preventive, developmental, remedial and intervention services and programs within the school environment

  • Triages and refers students to appropriate community resources 




      Other Duties and Responsibilities



      • Reports or assists with reports to the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD)

      • Proactively reduces barriers to student success

      • Provides instruction to students in areas such as peer helping, conflict resolution, social and life skills

      • Provides in-service and support to teachers in the area of counselling skills, youth mental health and provide updated information to school staff about Child Abuse Prevention on an annual basis

      • Works collaboratively with classroom teachers and advisors to advance students’ educational achievement through executive functioning skill development and goal setting

      • Supports educational programming related to child development, including coordination of preventative curriculum through the use of guest speakers and workshops

      • Assists with the development of students’ learning plans as well activities that promote effective work and study habits

      • Presents instructional/informational programs to groups of students, parents and teachers

      • Adheres to the ethical standards of the Counselling profession and practice in accordance with federal, provincial, and local laws, statutes, and/or policies that relate to students and families; such as, child protection/child abuse, special education, attendance, education rights and privacy

      • Occasionally runs parent education workshops and trains teachers and advisors

      • Assists parents and teachers in understanding and responding to developmental levels of students, acting as a liaison and resource to all parties

      • Promote a safe and caring school environment

      • Provides appropriate referrals to other support services and community resources

      • Attends student support meetings as necessary and act as a resource and support for students of concern

      • Is able to work within a flexible school schedule and available at other times to respond to emergencies and critical incidents

      • Carriers out other school duties as assigned 



       
        Attributes and Experience 



      • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing, with staff members, students, parents, and outside community agencies and partners

      • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team

      • Has a high degree of emotional intelligence and the ability to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times

      • Has a strong understanding of cross-cultural diversity

      • Has strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to staff /student privacy

      • Endorses the school’s mission and vision statement 







               
              Qualifications



              • Legally entitled to work in Canada

              • RCC, MACP, or CCC Designation 




                 
                Preferred Qualifications  



                • BC Teaching Certificate

                • Experience working in a school
