Client Service Results:
The Secondary Literacy Consultant is responsible for encouraging and promoting literacy best practices by mentoring and coaching education staff in effective literacy practices and approaches. The Secondary Literacy Consultant will help build capacity and provide access to culturally relevant and high-quality materials to institutions within our MK Family of schools. The Secondary literacy consultant will possess the skills and experience to work cooperatively and collaboratively with classroom teachers and members of school teams to support classroom instruction, monitor and track student growth & support students within a family of schools in their literacy development within our MK Family of schools and communities.
The Secondary Literacy Consultant should possess many of the following skills and competencies:
Skills:
Effective organizational and time management skills
Ability to write reports, correspondence, proposals, and procedure manuals
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
Use of technology and the ability to integrate digital learning environments within the classroom
Computer literate (including word processing, spreadsheets, internet, G-Suite, and Apple-based products)
Ability to communicate effectively (oral, written, presentations)
Strong interpersonal skills
Understanding and application of good change management principles
Familiarity with the MK family of schools.
Providing professional development, mentorship, and coaching for teachers
Implementing literacy programs
Development with teachers of culturally relevant materials and links to the curriculum and member communities.
Current with 6-12 English Language Arts curriculum
Strategies for developing and maintaining positive relationships built on trust, and collaboration to enhance planning, problem solving, risk taking, and decision making
Strategies for supporting teachers to become self-monitoring practitioners and self-extending learners
Authentic, balanced assessment strategies
Effective instructional strategies based on current research and concepts of Etuaptmumk or Two-Eyed Seeing
Knowledge of how students learn to read and write across all subjects
Use of technology and the ability to integrate digital learning environments within the classroom
Summary of Duties:
Oversight of literacy programs:
Succeeding in Reading
Promotion of community-based literacy projects
Scheduling monthly meetings with educators
Providing professional development opportunities both in person and hybrid model
Managing program budget
Development and facilitation of literacy-related professional development offerings for educators by:
Reviewing literacy assessment results
Determining development requirements/opportunities
Preparing, coordinating, and facilitating professional development sessions
Providing relevant materials to schools
Supporting mentorship and coaching in the MK schools
Development of literacy assessment tools by:
Reviewing school success goals with member communities and the MK team
Working collaboratively to develop tools to assess literacy rates
Reviewing assessment results
Support the usage of literacy data to inform instruction
Developing improvement strategies and plans based on assessment results with schools/educators
Providing school/educator-specific support (mentorship) through the implementation of improvement plans
strategies to interpret and respond to the changing contexts they experience from school to school, from teacher to teacher, and from one time to another
Awareness of and participation in a range of professional learning opportunities
Strategies for monitoring, assessing, evaluating, and reporting on the progress and success of coaching
Use of data to improve instruction and student achievement
Performing other duties as assigned, including the following:
Participate as the organization’s representative on all Department of Education and Early Childhood Development committees related to literacy
Sourcing and purchasing literacy materials at affordable costs, and coordinating delivery to schools
Development of an operational plan to achieve program-specific objectives
Monthly reporting on the progress of literacy goals
Education/Experience:
Master's Degree in Education, or equivalent, specializing in Literacy
5 years of teaching experience
Knowledge:
Mi’kmaw Education Act
First Nations communities
Government relations/organizations
First Nations education trends and developments
Mi’kmaw culture and traditions
Provincial curriculum (literacy, numeracy, etc.)
Basic understanding of band-operated schools
Data analysis techniques and the ability to identify trends
