The Senior Contaminated Sites Specialist is a senior technical and leadership role within the Brownfield Assessment & Development service group. This role is accountable for delivering high-quality contaminated site assessment and remediation projects, while strengthening MEMS’ technical capability, client relationships, and market presence.
This position provides advanced technical leadership, program oversight, and Qualified Person (QP) responsibilities, ensuring projects are executed to the highest standards of quality, compliance, and client satisfaction. The role includes application of technical expertise in the provision of contaminated sites assessment across Western Canada, with particular focus on BC and Alberta.

This role is accountable for ensuring technical excellence, project delivery, client satisfaction, and team development within the contaminated sites practice. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate leadership, sound judgment, and alignment with MEMS’ values in all aspects of their work.
Key Accountabilities
Technical Leadership & Quality Assurance
- Provide senior technical oversight on complex contaminated sites assessment, remediation, and risk management projects.
- Lead development and refinement of site assessment planning and execution, conceptual site models, risk-based strategies, and technical solutions.
- Conduct and approve senior-level technical reviews of reports, assessments, and deliverables.
- Act as a Qualified Person (QP) for site assessments, including stamping and verification of reports in accordance with professional regulatory requirements in both BC and Alberta.
- Identify and implement continuous improvements to internal technical processes, standards, and methodologies.
- Maintain awareness of evolving regulatory, technical, and industry standards to ensure compliance and technical excellence.
- Collaborate across service lines to provide subject matter expertise and integrated solutions.
Project & Portfolio Management
- Oversee project portfolios to ensure delivery aligned with scope, schedule, budget, safety, and quality expectations.
- Ensure all projects comply with MEMS’ integrated management systems, including safety, financial, and operational standards.
- Provide strategic input into complex or high-profile projects to ensure successful outcomes.
- Identify, escalate, and mitigate risks related to project execution (e.g., resourcing, cost, timelines).
Client Relationships & Business Growth
- Develop and sustain strong client relationships that drive repeat business and long-term partnerships.
- Act as a trusted advisor to clients on contaminated site strategy, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
- Support business development activities, including proposal development, technical input, and client engagement.
- Gather and communicate client insights to leadership to inform strategic decision-making and service expansion.
Leadership, Mentorship & Capability Building
- Provide mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance to team members across experience levels.
- Identify competency gaps and support development through structured training, coaching, and knowledge transfer.
- Contribute to the design and delivery of internal training programs and technical resources.
- Support the development of high-performing teams and a culture of continuous learning and accountability.
Thought Leadership & External Representation
- Represent MEMS as a technical leader through industry engagement, presentations, and professional networks.
- Contribute to innovation and thought leadership in contaminated site assessment and remediation.
What You Bring
- Minimum 8 years of directly related experience in contaminated sites, hydrogeology, or environmental assessment.
- Experience with site assessment on upstream sites considered an asset.
- Bachelor’s degree in hydrogeology, environmental science, engineering, or a related discipline.
- Eligible for registration with a relevant professional association.
- Professional Designation in both BC and AB to meet requirements for Qualified Person (QP) designation preferred.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and ability to meet client site access requirements (including testing where required).
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of environmental assessment, remediation practices, and regulatory frameworks.
- Knowledge of the oil & gas, oil sands, and broader industrial/brownfields sectors.
- Advanced ability to interpret and communicate complex technical data.
- Strong collaboration skills in multidisciplinary environments.
- High level of organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing priorities.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety leadership and safe work practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools and technical reporting.
Working Conditions
- Primarily office-based with periodic field visits.
- Extended periods working at a computer.
- Occasional travel and work outside regular hours may be required.
- Physical requirements may include lifting (up to 30 kg), standing, walking, and site-based activities.
Pay Transparency:
In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At MEMS certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
Pay Range: $95,000 - $135,000
