The Senior Estimator is responsible for leading the preparation of accurate, competitive, and well-supported estimates across a diverse portfolio of projects, including heavy civil construction, workforce camps and catering, and resource-sector work (oil & gas, logging, mining)
This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate closely with operations, project management, subcontractors, and senior leadership. The successful candidate will provide estimating leadership throughout the bid process and support a smooth transition from award to execution.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the preparation of detailed cost estimates for a variety of projects.
Review and interpret drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, RFPs, and contract documents to fully understand project scope, risk, and logistics.
Perform and oversee quantity take-offs for civil, structural, site works, and service-based scopes as applicable.
Develop pricing strategies, construction approaches, and value-engineering options to improve bid competitiveness.
Solicit, analyze, and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing, ensuring full scope coverage and alignment with project requirements.
Identify project risks, constraints, assumptions, and opportunities, and clearly document them within estimates and tender submissions.
Prepare complete tender packages, including pricing breakdowns, assumptions, exclusions, and supporting documentation.
Participate in pre-bid meetings, site walks, and internal bid strategy reviews.
Collaborate with Project Managers, Superintendents, and operations teams to validate constructability, sequencing, staffing, and logistics assumptions.
Support bid handover by clearly communicating estimate details, risks, and pricing to the project delivery team.
Maintain and improve unit rates, historical cost data, and estimating tools.
Monitor market conditions, subcontractor availability, labour trends, and material pricing.
Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating processes and mentor junior estimators where applicable.
Significant estimating experience in construction and/or industrial services; senior-level experience preferred.
Strong understanding of drawings, specifications, and project sequencing.
Solid analytical skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across multiple departments.
Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Diploma or degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related field is an asset; equivalent experience will be considered.
Knowledge of Western Canadian labour, equipment, and material pricing is an advantage.
