Job Description - Senior Geotechnical / Geological Engineer (Rock Mechanics & Geohazards)

Clifton is currently searching for a skilled Senior Geotechnical / Geological Engineer, specializing in rock mechanics and rock slope geohazards to join our Earth Sciences practice team in British Columbia. Residency in British Columbia is required for this position, and we welcome candidates from across the province who are eager to contribute to our work in the region. In this role, you contribute your expertise on a variety of exciting geotechnical and geological projects throughout the province. You will be responsible for conducting detailed analyses and assessments, developing and implementing strategies to mitigate geological risks, performing field investigations, and designing rock stabilization and support systems.


Key Responsibilities



  • Lead and participate in a wide variety of geotechnical projects and field programs.

  • Perform site investigations, mapping, and digital terrain modelling to identify and assess geohazards, including landslides, rockfalls, and erosion risks.

  • Utilize remote sensing, GIS technologies, and advanced geotechnical software (e.g., FLAC, Rocscience, CAE, Surpac, Deswick, etc.) to assess, model, and mitigate rock-based geohazards through spatial analysis, stability simulations, and effective design of hazard mitigation strategies.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop integrated solutions for high-risk geotechnical sites.

  • Prepare reports, drawings, and specifications for quarries, mines, slope stabilization, geohazard mitigation, foundations and earthwork for a wide range of projects including oil and gas, mining, transportation, water, design and construction.

  • Develop and execute detailed hazard assessments, risk assessments, and stability analyses for rock slopes and other rock-based geohazards.

  • Provide recommendations for mine and quarry design, scheduling, mine survey, resource estimation, and drill & blast.

  • Participate in the development of standards, specifications and procedures for geotechnical matters relating to ballast source identification and quarry development.

  • Ensure effective project management, including accountability for financial and technical performance, to ensure project milestone and deliverables are met on time and within scope.

  • Complete or review technical proposals and design work packages in response to client needs.

  • Support business development activities, including recruitment of new clients and new sectors of the economy not currently being served by Clifton.

  • Maintain positive working relationships with vendors, consultants, internal stakeholders, and other parties vital to our business success.

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, and geologists, to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

  • Act as a safety leader and champion for Clifton’s health and safety program.

  • Ensure adherence to Clifton’s Quality Management System (QMS) in project delivery, including contracts management.

  • Other duties, as assigned.


Required Qualifications and Experience



  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Geological or Mining Engineering, Geoscience, or a related field. Preference given to candidates who have obtained a Graduate Degree in Geotechnical, rock mechanics, or Mining Engineering.

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience in geotechnical, geological, or mining engineering.

  • Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer or Geoscientist in Canada.

  • Advanced proficiency with geological modelling and geotechnical software (FLAC, Rocscience, CAE, Surpac, Deswik, etc.).

  • Experience working in remote northern environments, mountainous terrain, and adverse weather conditions an asset.

  • Practical experience in geotechnical / geological core logging, including the development and management of field programs.

  • Strong organizational skills, including effective management of multiple and conflicting priorities with the ability to meet deadlines, in the context of work/life balance.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience with an ability to manage a diverse team of technical professionals.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, time, and team management skills.

  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of products.

  • Ability to travel for field work, as required.

  • Continued attention to safety and safe work environments, with a strong workplace safety orientation.
