Meridia Recruitment Solutions is pleased to partner with GEMTEC in recruiting a Senior Materials Technician to join their team in Saint John, New Brunswick. As the successful candidate, you will work on exciting projects in southwestern New Brunswick, where GEMTEC makes a significant contribution to infrastructure upgrades and regional developments.

Role Description

Reporting to the Branch Manager, the Senior Materials Technician will perform and lead field and laboratory testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt to support geotechnical investigations and construction quality control. This role involves coordinating with engineers, maintaining equipment calibrations, and contributing to the preparation of technical reports. You will play a key role in ensuring materials meet project specifications and supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality infrastructure projects across a range of sectors.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Perform field and laboratory testing of construction materials including soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt in accordance with CSA, ASTM, and CCIL standards.

  • Assist with geotechnical site investigations, including borehole logging, sampling, and test pit observations.

  • Conduct in-situ testing such as Standard Penetration Testing (SPT), and Dynamic Cone Penetration (DCP).

  • Collect and prepare samples for laboratory analysis, ensuring proper chain-of-custody and documentation.

  • Operate and maintain lab and field testing equipment, ensuring calibration and cleanliness.

  • Accurately record test data and assist in preparing technical summaries and test reports for review by engineers.

  • Communicate with site supervisors, engineers, and contractors to coordinate testing schedules and ensure quality control.

  • Working collaboratively with other GEMTEC offices, particularly for larger and multi-disciplinary assignments.

  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging regulatory requirements and best practices.

  • Adhering to health and safety protocols, promoting a safe working environment.

  • Assisting with multi-disciplinary infrastructure and heavy civil construction projects as required.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a related discipline; CET or P.Tech designation or eligibility is considered a strong asset.

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in construction materials testing or geotechnical fieldwork preferred.

  • Knowledge of standard testing procedures for soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates (CSA, ASTM, AASHTO).

  • Experience operating field equipment and in-situ testing tools.

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately document and report test results.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team, with strong time management and organizational skills.

  • Comfortable working in field conditions, including remote or active construction sites, in varying weather.

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and openness to occasional travel throughout the Maritimes, as required.

  • Familiarity with CCIL certification requirements is an asset.

  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to company health and safety protocols.

GEMTEC recognizes the value of their exceptional team members. This is an opportunity to be a part of a culture that fosters creativity, encourages fresh ideas, and values initiative. Elevate your professional journey with a company committed to investing in your development and success.
