We are more than 36,000 people, in over 70 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world’s most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior Transportation Planner / Engineer to join our growing team in Vancouver, BC. This senior-level role requires a recognized expert in multi-modal transportation planning and engineering, with extensive technical expertise, project management, leadership, business development, and strategic problem-solving skills. You will lead the development and implementation of engineering solutions, manage client relationships at the senior management level, and provide oversight and mentorship to a dynamic team of engineers and planners.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on transformative projects, contribute to the development of sustainable transportation systems, and build strong relationships with public and private sector clients in the Vancouver, and broader British Columbia, and Western Canada markets.

Role accountabilities:

In this role, you will lead technical development in transportation planning, roadway design, traffic engineering, traffic management, and traffic safety review and road safety audit projects. You will also lead the preparation of business cases for transportation projects and oversee traffic operations, transit operations, and traffic management during construction projects. Your expertise will extend to providing preliminary and detailed design for intersections, arterial roads, highways, and freeways, including alignments, geometrics, staging, traffic management, roadside safety, and road safety assessments. Additionally, performing senior-level technical work, delegating assignments, and overseeing the completion of technical tasks by junior team members will be key responsibilities. You will provide technical leadership and oversight, ensuring quality deliverables, such as engineering reports, business cases, studies, and analyses related to traffic operations, road safety, travel demand modeling, and transportation planning projects.

Furthermore, you will lead the preparation of traffic engineering plans for signal designs, signing and marking designs, and other transportation-related design elements. Managing and supervising mid-sized teams/resources will be part of your duties, ensuring effective direction of project teams for successful execution. You will communicate effectively with team members at all levels, offering technical guidance, oversight, and mentorship. Performing technical reviews of engineering work products to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards is essential. Additionally, you will manage budgets for projects or tasks, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget. Building and maintaining strong business relationships with public and private sector clients, including relationship management at senior management levels, is crucial. You will recruit, motivate, and mentor team members to foster professional growth and meet project goals and objectives.

You will support business development efforts by identifying opportunities, preparing proposals, and presenting to prospective clients. Staying current with Vancouver and Western Canada (BC and AB) market conditions, including transportation policies, standards, and trends, will be necessary to ensure the relevance and competitiveness of your projects.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or a related field; an advanced degree is preferred

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) Certification or equivalent

  • Over 20 years of engineering experience, with a focus on leading engineering solutions

  • Recognized expert in transportation planning and engineering with a strong professional network

  • Proven success in managing medium-sized projects and directing project teams

  • Advanced proficiency in transportation design/modeling software like Synchro, VISSIM, and AutoCAD

  • Strong strategic problem-solving skills and technical knowledge in transportation planning

  • Excellent project management and client relationship management skills

  • Superior written and verbal communication abilities, including presentation skills

  • Excellent time management skills, capable of handling multiple priorities and deadlines

Preferred:

  • Experience in preparing traffic engineering plans and understanding emerging trends in smart mobility and climate-resilient systems

  • Familiarity with the needs and policies of BC and AB public and private sector clients
