$46,000 - 58,000 monthly
A couple of years in, and you can turn a thin brief into a clean 900-word post without breaking a sweat. That should feel good. Instead, it feels like a ceiling.
The feedback dried up after the first few months. Your drafts go into a queue and come out published, and you never see what the editor changed or why. The client's name is on the invoice, never in your inbox. And the same question keeps coming back: what am I learning here, and where is it taking me?
You're good at this. You've just stopped getting better at it.
We built this role for that exact moment.
At Digital Shift, the writing is the product. Since 2007, we've helped plumbers, HVAC companies, electricians, remodelers, and appliance repair shops across Canada and the US win customers in search engines and, now, get recommended by AI assistants. We're hiring a full-time SEO Content Writer / Proofreader, reporting to our Content Lead. SEO writing is the core of the role. Layered on top is the half most writers never get to see: editing teammates' work, checking facts before anything ships, publishing in the CMS, and sending the finished page to the client with your name on the email. You don't need to have done any of that before. We'll train you. It's a writing career with an editor's responsibilities built in, and it's the step most writers never get offered.

Most of the week is writing and optimizing. A brief lands: a furnace repair page for an HVAC contractor in Edmonton. You research what homeowners there are asking, what the competitors' pages get wrong, and what this client does differently. Then you write something that ranks, gets picked up in AI answers, and reads like a local expert wrote it.
The rest is the part that grows with you. A teammate's service page for a plumber in Houston comes through for proofreading. It reads okay. Okay isn't what we ship. You tighten the flow, fix the comma splice in paragraph three, confirm the service area matches the client's site, and make sure the keyword sits naturally instead of being jammed in. You publish the clean version, check the live page, and email the client the link. The growth is in learning to do this to a standard most agencies never hold.
Helpful, but not required: home service writing, agency experience, editing other writers' work, or publishing in WordPress or another CMS.
A year in, here's what you'll be able to do that you can't today: edit another writer's work without flattening their voice, fact-check a page against primary sources, publish in a live CMS, and write a client email that gets a yes. Those are the skills our senior content roles are built on.
We've done digital marketing our own way since 2007: no agency nonsense, teams that get results, relationships that last. Different perspectives are heard here, and your well-being isn't an afterthought.
Ready to stop writing in a vacuum? The assessment is the application: no cover letter, no multi-day sample project.
