Job Description - SEO Content Writer / Proofreader

A couple of years in, and you can turn a thin brief into a clean 900-word post without breaking a sweat. That should feel good. Instead, it feels like a ceiling.

The feedback dried up after the first few months. Your drafts go into a queue and come out published, and you never see what the editor changed or why. The client's name is on the invoice, never in your inbox. And the same question keeps coming back: what am I learning here, and where is it taking me?

You're good at this. You've just stopped getting better at it.

We built this role for that exact moment.

At Digital Shift, the writing is the product. Since 2007, we've helped plumbers, HVAC companies, electricians, remodelers, and appliance repair shops across Canada and the US win customers in search engines and, now, get recommended by AI assistants. We're hiring a full-time SEO Content Writer / Proofreader, reporting to our Content Lead. SEO writing is the core of the role. Layered on top is the half most writers never get to see: editing teammates' work, checking facts before anything ships, publishing in the CMS, and sending the finished page to the client with your name on the email. You don't need to have done any of that before. We'll train you. It's a writing career with an editor's responsibilities built in, and it's the step most writers never get offered.

Why You'll Love Working Here

  • Your work gets read. The Content Lead and senior editors review every draft, tell you what they changed and why, and care what the page sounds like when it goes live. That's the feedback loop you've been missing.
  • Two skill sets, one role. You'll take content from brief to live page and add editing, fact-checking, publishing, and client communication to your writing.
  • Paid training, no editor title required. You don't need editing or CMS experience to apply. Paid onboarding and role-specific training cover our clients, tools, publishing process, and quality standards.
  • Remote, with a schedule that fits. Full-time hours. Set consistent daily start and end times that work for your life and meet team commitments.

Your Day-to-Day

Most of the week is writing and optimizing. A brief lands: a furnace repair page for an HVAC contractor in Edmonton. You research what homeowners there are asking, what the competitors' pages get wrong, and what this client does differently. Then you write something that ranks, gets picked up in AI answers, and reads like a local expert wrote it.

The rest is the part that grows with you. A teammate's service page for a plumber in Houston comes through for proofreading. It reads okay. Okay isn't what we ship. You tighten the flow, fix the comma splice in paragraph three, confirm the service area matches the client's site, and make sure the keyword sits naturally instead of being jammed in. You publish the clean version, check the live page, and email the client the link. The growth is in learning to do this to a standard most agencies never hold.

What You'll Do

  • Research home service topics and write accurate, useful blog posts, service pages, and marketing copy that match search intent and each client's voice.
  • Turn briefs into well-structured drafts with headlines that earn the click, then place keywords, headings, and internal links where they read naturally.
  • Proofread your own work and teammates' content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, tone, and consistency, and edit for clarity and flow without flattening the writer's meaning.
  • Verify services, locations, names, and claims, and flag anything unsupported or possibly plagiarized.
  • Coordinate drafts and approvals with clients, work in the agreed revisions, and keep feedback and deadlines on track with the Content Lead and SEO team.
  • Format, publish, and update approved content in WordPress or Crownpeak, then check the live page and send the client the link.

What You'll Bring

  • 1 to 3+ years of professional content writing experience, ideally for websites or other digital platforms. More experience is welcome.
  • A university degree or college diploma in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent written English and a sharp proofreading eye. You catch the subtle stuff.
  • Familiarity with SEO basics (search intent, natural keyword use) and with Canadian or US spelling conventions. We'll build on both.
  • Comfort with Google Docs, Grammarly, and AI tools for research and outlining, paired with the editorial taste to know when AI prose sounds generic, inaccurate, or flat.
  • Clear email writing, reliable time management, and a dependable, responsive approach to remote work.

Helpful, but not required: home service writing, agency experience, editing other writers' work, or publishing in WordPress or another CMS.

Where This Role Goes

A year in, here's what you'll be able to do that you can't today: edit another writer's work without flattening their voice, fact-check a page against primary sources, publish in a live CMS, and write a client email that gets a yes. Those are the skills our senior content roles are built on.

About Digital Shift
