The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a permanent full-time Service Technician in the Information Technology & Transformation division.


Job description


The Service Technician is a member of the Service Management team who provide support for over 1600 devices and approximately 3000 users at 89 sites spread throughout a large geographic area in Chatham-Kent. The team supports over 30 diverse business units, each with their own unique requirements and expectations. The Service Management team is responsible for the deployment and management of all end-user devices such as desktops, laptops, Chrome devices, cell phones, iPads, point of sale, and various accessories., They are also responsible for initial troubleshooting for all reported incidents by managing the service desk functions which include responding to phone requests, online portal ticket submissions, and in-person interactions.  The Service Technician uses various tools and systems to manage Windows and many other devices, The service technician follows ITIL best practices to effectively manage incidents, service requests and other ITIL related methodologies.  The Service Technician works primarily from the central location of the municipality (Civic Centre based out of Chatham Ontario) and uses the IT service vehicles to travel to various municipal locations to provide support throughout Chatham-Kent.


Essential responsibilities



  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies

  • Responds to requests, inquiries and issues from end users on technology related services.

  • Creates, updates and closes a high volume of electronic tickets in the service management tool.

  • Responsible for the setup and support of all end user devices, moves hardware, and does cable management.

  • Travels to various locations in Chatham-Kent to support municipal staff and technology using municipal vehicles.

  • Responsible for managing all access related requests for the business and updating Active Directory accordingly.

  • Perform software installations while keeping track of software licenses.

  • Perform hardware repairs to various types of devices using provided toolsets (bench work).

  • Researches, purchases and receives technology products through various methods and follows all approval processes.

  • Sets up and deploys new technology to end users, ensuring their proper use while providing basic education.

  • Retires technology by following industry best practices for Information technology asset disposition and physically disposes of technology at designated e-waste transfer stations using municipal vehicles.

  • Participates in projects such as the annual device lifecycle project.

  • Updates all relevant inventory and asset databases throughout the process.

  • Creates documentation in the knowledgebase and standard operating procedures.

  • Improves understanding of new technologies through continuous ongoing learning and development

  • Participates in a weekly afterhours on-call rotation providing emergency technical support 24/7/365.


Essential qualifications



  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies

  • College diploma or university degree (preferably in a computer science program)

  • Six months to two years of related experience preferred

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Experience with Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM) and InTune for device management.

  • Experience using a service management ticketing tool based on ITIL principles involving incident and service request management is also an asset.

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft’s Active Directory, Group Policy Objects and user management an asset.

  • Experience supporting Microsoft Office 365 applications

  • Knowledge of communication platforms such as; Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Teams, and VOIP service technology.

  • Knowledge of physical computer components and architectures, including the functions of various components and peripherals (i.e., CPUs, Network Interface Cards, data storage)

  • Knowledge of cybersecurity and privacy best practices and how to apply them in respect to this position


Certifications, memberships, licenses



  • Microsoft 365 Certified Endpoint Administrator Associate (required)

  • CompTIA A+ Certification (asset)Dell Certified Technician (asset, or certification required within 90 days of employment)

  • ITIL v4 Foundations certification (asset, or certification required within 90 days of employment)

  • MS-900: Microsoft 365 Certified: Fundamentals (asset, or certification required within 6 months of employment)

  • Valid class G (or higher) Ontario driver’s licence (required)


Work environment/hours of work



  • This position works mostly indoors

  • This position works weekday, occasional weekend and evening hours, as well as on-call after hours and on weekends.

  • Required to be available outside normal business hours to assist with major incidents

  • This position works at various locations including a rotation at Riverview Gardens Long-Term Care Home


Driver’s licence/vehicle requirements


Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G (or higher) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. An acceptable driver’s abstract will: be an original document and current (within the previous thirty (30) days); have no more than four (4) demerit points; have no more than two (2) convictions for the same offence; have no criminal code convictions; have no ‘non-medical or administrative’ license suspension in the preceding three (3) years; because this position may be required to drive their own vehicle, a reliable vehicle is also required.


Background check requirements


Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment. A background check may include the following: education/certification verification and employment reference check. Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (Criminal Record Check) prior to commencement of employment.

  • Walking: frequent walking on level surface

  • Sitting: frequent sitting in chair

  • Standing: frequent standing inside

  • Hands: frequent fine finger dexterity (movement) and mousing

  • Annual Flu immunization is required

  • 2 step TB skin test to be completed within two weeks of starting position


Benefits


This permanent full-time position has an annual salary of $62,580 to $70,770 and will receive benefits including: participation in the OMERS pension plan (mandatory) as well as sick and vacation entitlements. Following successful completion of a 3-month waiting period, candidates will also be entitled to a comprehensive group benefits package.
