The Front of House Service Worker supports the daily operations of the Artisanal Food Market through customer service, merchandising, cash handling, cleaning, and general food service support. This position is responsible for creating a welcoming and efficient experience for students, staff, visitors, and coworkers while maintaining cleanliness, organization, and food safety standards within the market environment.

This is a hands-on, fast-paced role that requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Tasks are performed in accordance with established procedures, operational guidelines, and health and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet customers and answer questions about products, menu items, and services.
  • Provide friendly, professional customer service to students, staff, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems and process debit, credit, and other payment methods.
  • Handle refunds, exchanges, and returns in accordance with policy.
  • Keep front-of-house areas, coolers, freezers, displays, and workstations clean, organized, and well-stocked.
  • Restock shelves and maintain attractive product displays and merchandising standards.
  • Monitor product quality and rotate stock following food safety and freshness procedures.
  • Manage customer lineups and maintain efficient service flow during busy periods.
  • Assist with packaging, labeling, and basic food preparation support as required.
  • Communicate customer feedback, operational concerns, and service issues to the Team Lead or Supervisor.
  • Follow health, safety, sanitation, and food handling procedures.
  • Assist with market events, promotions, and seasonal activities.
  • Perform general cleaning duties including wiping surfaces, washing dishes and utensils, and maintaining overall cleanliness of the workspace.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Positive attitude and professional demeanor.
  • Comfortable using POS systems and handling customer transactions.
  • Ability to multitask, stay organized, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, cleanliness, and product presentation.
  • Team player with a collaborative and respectful work ethic.
  • Ability to take direction and work independently when needed.
  • Reliable, punctual, proactive, and dependable.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs. unassisted.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including days, evenings, weekends, and split shifts as operationally required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade nine.
  • Experience in retail, food service, hospitality, or customer service is an asset.
  • Basic math and cash-handling skills.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices in a service environment.
  • Food Safety and Sanitation Certificate is required (must be obtained before completion of the probationary period).
  • Equivalent may be considered.

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).

Classification – Service Worker

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.

Remuneration

Refer to salary range noted on this posting, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation pay.

Note: Remuneration for part-time positions will be pro-rated based on FTE (full-time equivalent).

The compensation range for this job posting is : $17.33 - $23.29
