Association for New Canadians is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to


the provision of settlement and integration services for immigrants and refugees.

Location:

St. John’s, NL


Position Type:
1 full-time position until March 31, 2026 with possibility of extension pending budget availability and satisfactory performance

Reporting to the Mental Health and Health Services Manager, the Settlement Social Worker will be responsible for providing newcomer refugee families with immediate essential services to support their transition and settlement into Canada. The Settlement Social Worker will deliver social work services to support newcomers and work to create an environment that is accepting and welcoming of diversity.



Roles and Responsibilities:



  • Conduct comprehensive client assessments on the overall health, mental health, abilities, and needs of the clients

  • Develop and perform presentations for clients, staff, and community partners

  • Perform social work with individuals/families, and in group settings in office, school and home settings

  • Perform crisis intervention as well as solutions-focused guidance to newcomers experiencing difficulties adjusting 

  • Refer to and collaborate with different ANC teams and external community partners for a coordinated effort focused on the client’s overall well-being

  • Build client relationships to arrive at a position of trust while respecting religious and cultural backgrounds and addressing specific needs

  • Maintain continuous follow-up with the client to ensure appointments with community resources are met, and client-identified milestones are achieved

  • Maintain case files, statistics, and stakeholder reports according to deadlines

  • Actively participate in local and national committees and workshops to share information and build knowledge of best practices

  • Conduct thorough needs and asset assessments for newcomers with disabilities, identifying their unique challenges, strengths, and support requirements

  • Offer ongoing case management support to address a range of needs, including education, health, therapy, and social integration

  • Facilitate access to specialized services, accommodations, and resources that cater to the specific needs of individuals with disabilities


Qualifications and Experience:



  • Must have a Bachelor of Social Work and be a registered Social Worker

  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity working with a diverse client group

  • Demonstrated social work skills working with clients (children, youth and adults) that may have experienced complex trauma, violence, mental health, and addictions

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace

  • Strong communication skills and team-oriented

  • The ability to prioritize referrals and multitask. Skilled in crisis intervention and conflict resolution

  • Knowledge of child welfare and community development services

  • Competency in case file management and preparing stakeholder reports


Conditions of Employment:



  • Legal authorization to work in Canada 

  • Flexible to work outside of core hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm)

  • Some travel is required

  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and daily access to a vehicle is required

  • Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
