Shelter Security- Nights

Position Summary:

Wasauksing First Nation is accepting applications for a Shelter Security Guard. The Shelter Security Guard position’s is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of all residents, staff, all assets and property. Reporting to Shelter Manger and indirectly to the Shelter Supervisor, the incumbent will provide security and protection services, as part of a shelter team, within a 24/7 Domestic Violence and Intimate Partner Violence Shelter with the primary objective to detect, deter, protect and report all incidents. The Shelter Security Guard works as part of a team to ensure the smooth operation of the shelter by knowing who is in the building, managing the entrance door as necessary, and declining entry to non-shelter users and/or threats affecting safety and security of shelter guests. The ideal candidates(s) must also enjoy working with people and as part of a collaborative team.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

• Support intake worker as they complete bag, purse and pocket checks, upon admittance of stay.


• Respond to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and clients.


• Observes relationships among residents and recognize changes in individual and group dynamics to ensure the safety of all residents and zero-tolerance policy towards violence, abusive behaviour.


• Models and reinforces positive interpersonal relationships with shelter staff and residents.


• Removing persons from the premises when required in a non-violent manner.


• Implements appropriate behavior management techniques to promote stability and effect change where necessary.


• Maintains required written records of all incidents and significant interaction with shelter guests contributing knowledge, observations and assessments to develop and maintain case management.


• Complete reports by recording observations, information, occurrences and surveillance activities; interviewing witnesses; obtaining signatures.


• The Shelter values and protects confidentiality of client information. All staff are to ensure clients personal information is safeguarded appropriately.


• Maintains security requirements of the shelter such as securing premises indoors, patrolling property; monitoring surveillance equipment; inspecting buildings, equipment and access points.


• Protect the Shelter’s assets relative to theft, assault, fire and other safety issues


• Manage threats affecting safety/security of shelter guests and take corrective action while adhering to established policies in an emergency


• Ensure operation of security equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; informing Manager/Supervisor of necessary repairs.


• Provide excellent customer service.


• Commitment to practice self-reflection, empathy, truly seeing and hearing the experience of shelter guests.


• Perform other duties as necessary.


• Adhere to all policies and procedures of Wasauksing First Nation and any other relevant policies and procedures from external agencies and partners


• Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned by the Manager or Supervisor  
  

Education & Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED.


• Post Secondary education in related field is an asset.


• 2 – 3 years of security services experience is an asset (or willing to train).


• Prior experience specifically related to working in residential crisis housing is considered an asset. This may include placement experience.


• Understanding of “Use of Force Theory”


• Have a valid Ontario Security Guard License


• Cultural competency skills and the ability to be inclusive of diversity.


• Current certification in CPR Level C and First Aid Level C.


• Current certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention or willing to obtain.

Other Requirements: 

• Knowledge of systemic barriers, legislations, and sociological issues impacting First Nations.


• Cultural competency and ability to be inclusive of diversity.


• Valid Driver's License and reliable personal vehicle


• Willing to work flexible hours as required, including evenings and weekends


• To protect children, youth and vulnerable persons, Wasauksing First Nation requires the individual to provide a clear vulnerable sector.
