Description
Reporting to the Head Chef, the Sous Chef is responsible for assisting in the creation and preparation of menus and meals for clients of the Central Shelter. The Sous Chef will ensure meals are ready to be served in compliance with all health regulations. They will also ensure all food deliveries from suppliers and donations are received, recorded, sorted, and stored in the most efficient manner. The Sous Chef will support in the preparing and serving up to 400 meals on a daily basis while working with other staff and volunteers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare healthy and nutritious meals
- Execute menus that fit the budget and available donations
- Receive, verify orders and store all purchased food and kitchen items
- Lead volunteers and support staff in the process of preparation, service, and cleaning of a meal service
- Work collaboratively to keep stored food rotations current
- Maintain Occupational Health & Safety standards and records
- Know and follow the Environmental Health Services Guidelines regarding how food is prepared, handled, and stored
- Keep all food inventories up to date
- Track statistics such as but not limited to temperature audits, serving stats, meals served
- Ensure cleanliness is maintained in kitchen
- Food pickups may be required
- Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- A minimum of 2 years experience working in the Food Service industry is preferred
- Experience with menu planning, large quantity cooking, and working with donated goods is an asset
- Ability to lead a team consisting of paid staff and volunteers
- Ability to resolve conflicts as they arise
- Working knowledge of OHS and other food guidelines
- Valid Food Handler’s Certification
- Valid First-Aid Training
- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is an asset
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Position is often fast-paced, and requires substantial effort to analyze information and problem solve
- Potentially high-pressure environment, the ability to adapt to change and find creative solutions is essential
- This position requires varied mental and emotional effort, must be able to respond appropriately to intense situations, provide conflict resolution and work directly with clients at risk
- Moderate to significant physical effort: must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, extensive periods of standing, walking, and reaching
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

- Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
- A reliable vehicle is required
- A valid driver’s license, driver’s abstract, $2 million dollar liability insurance required.
This position requires the use of a company vehicle and personal vehicle for company use. The candidate must have a valid driver’s license, provide a driver’s abstract and maintain $2M Vehicle Liability insurance on the vehicle being used.
