Southern Youth Coordinator – Youth Programs and Services
Location: 124-1530 27th Avenue NE Calgary, AB Closing Date: Until Suitable Candidate Found Position Status: Full Time (40 hrs per week), Permanent
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for a Southern Youth Coordinator to strategize, execute, and support youth programs and services. The successful candidates will be able to take initiative and follow through, provide constructive and creative input, and be open to learning. The Southern Youth Coordinator will not be afraid to ask questions, learn from their mistakes, or be honest and constructive with the team. The successful candidate will be willing to constantly improve based on feedback and provide solutions and alternatives.
Reporting to the Youth Programs Manager, the Southern Youth Coordinator will work directly with the Youth Programs and Services department to support the development and implementation of programming in Southern Alberta. The successful candidate will also support provincial events and grant processes as required by the department. The Southern Youth Coordinator should have a background in program development and report writing, experience working with youth, and knowledge of Métis culture and traditional skills. Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement cultural enrichment programming in Southern Alberta. This can include, but is not limited to, beading workshops, moccasin making classes, Bannock tutorials, Michif lessons, etc.
Develop and implement life-skills programming in Southern Alberta. This can include, but is not limited to: Tax classes, Firearms Safety Certification, Babysitters’ Training, etc.
Create program launch requests including budgets, timeframes, dates, and locations.
Develop and maintain templates, documents, and resources to guide programming.
Develop communications requests and work collaboratively with internal communications support to advertise programs and increase attendance.
Work to increase program accessibility to the Southern Métis community.
Support provincial events and youth camps.
Report on programming.
Assist with grant processes when required.
Collaborate and work proactively with other Coordinators to drive programing forward.
Source, schedule, and work effectively with internal and external program facilitators.
Maintain a high level of political awareness, cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and confidentiality in interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
Other duties as required or assigned.
Skills & Competencies
Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. Competent in Métis traditional skills and knowledge (beading, Bannock making, history of Métis people in Alberta, etc.).
Strong cultural sensitivity.
Passion for working with youth.
Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven track record of building collaborative partnerships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to work independently and as part of a very collaborative team.
Political sensitivity and ability to deal with confidential information.
Ability to assess options and implications, engage different perspectives, and create strategic solutions for challenges.
Superior written and oral communication skills.
Strong planning, brainstorming, and collaboration abilities.
Ability to effectively manage and prioritize requests, multitask, and meet tight deadlines.
Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to work in a diverse and fast paced environment.
Experience with Microsoft Suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
Qualifications
Post-secondary education relating to youth support or Indigenous studies.
Minimum 2 years work experience in program development and implementation.
Experience working with youth is an asset.
Training in trauma informed approaches and language is an asset.
Other Requirements
Ability to work a regular schedule of Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, as well as occasional evenings and weekends.
Travel within Alberta is a requirement. Additional, less frequent, out-of-province travel may also occur, with notice.
Able to work flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.
Must have a driver’s license as well as reliable transportation.
