Job Description - Specialist, Disability & Occupational Testing

Our Human Resources group is currently looking to add a Disability & Occupational Testing Specialist to our team, based in Edmonton, AB.

Reporting to the Manager, Disability & Benefits, we are seeking a highly organized and compassionate professional who has demonstrated expertise in workers’ compensation case management, drug and alcohol testing coordination, substance abuse assessments, and non-occupational injury support. The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of the Canadian WCB systems, a proactive approach to employee wellness, and the ability to manage sensitive cases with discretion and care.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of injured worker claims from initial report through to resolution
  • Assess eligibility for benefits under the Workers’ Compensation Act
  • Coordinate care plans with healthcare providers, employers, and injured workers
  • Communicate decisions and next steps clearly to all stakeholders
  • Address barriers to recovery and facilitate timely return-to-work plans
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all case activities
  • Schedule and monitor pre-employment, random, post-incident, and return-to-duty tests
  • Liaise with third-party labs and Medical Review Officers
  • Interpret and communicate test results with appropriate stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies
  • Support employees through substance abuse programs and coordinate follow-up services as needed
  • Manage non-work-related injury and illness claims efficiently and with empathy
  • Develop and monitor individualized return-to-work plans in collaboration with HR and healthcare providers
  • Ensure compliance with human rights legislation and privacy standards
  • Act as the primary contact for employees on medical leave
  • Prepare reports for leadership on case trends, outcomes, and compliance metrics
  • Post-Secondary Education in Human Resources, Occupational Health, Disability Management, or a related field
  • 3 years of experience working with a Canadian Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) including knowledge of jurisdictions, health and safety regulations, and privacy laws
  • Equivalent and experience will be considered
  • Previous experience with Drug & Alcohol program administration
  • Strong communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills
