Reporting to the Director of Quality and Wellness and Chief Heritage Officer, the Manager, Spiritual Care will work collaboratively with staff, physicians and members of the leadership team to ensure alignment between corporate and program strategic and operational priorities. The Manager, Spiritual Care provides leadership and guidance in spiritual care and chaplaincy services, works closely with the Director to support the Cultural Advisory Panel to assist in creating, articulating and sustaining a Hospital and Apotex wide vision for the Spiritual Care and as a Jewish Faith Based Institution. The Manager, Spiritual Care will be accountable for, and deliver, oversight to the spiritual care practitioners in delivering Programs/Services in group and one to one formats to meet the spiritual needs of the residents/patients.

The Manager, Spiritual Care acts as the designated lead for the religious and spiritual practices program for the long term care home to ensure residents are given reasonable opportunity to practice their religious and spiritual believes and to observe the requirements of those believes. The Manager, Spiritual care is a staff-based representation of the core Jewish identity of Baycrest, yet respectful, encouraging and facilitating of the complex nature and religious beliefs and convictions of others. The Manager, Spiritual Care works in collaboration with the Department of Culture & Arts and the Jewish Cultural & Spiritual Programming Coordinator to assist in the planning and, where called upon, provision of religious/spiritual programming and participates as a member of the Culture Advisory Panel.

The Manager Spiritual Care recognizes and honours all persons, respectful of their unique journey and the interweaving of their health, cultural, philosophical, religious and/or spiritual traditions.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Plans, develops, implements and evaluates appropriate spiritual care programs throughout Baycrest including, but not limited to weekly Jewish learning programs, High-holiday services and other Jewish holiday programming.
  • Provides spiritual direction, individual and group counseling to residents/patients, families and members of the Baycrest congregation and the broader community.
  • Offers life-cycle support, including end-of-life counseling to residents/patients and families.
  • Participates in and provides expert guidance to the Apotex and Hospital end of life/palliative committees
  • Facilitates the involvement of appropriate community religious/spiritual resources at the request of the resident/patient and/or families.
  • Maintains appropriate staffing levels and coverage for all religious and spiritual care ceremonies including, but not limited to weekly Torah study, Shabbat services, High Holiday days
  • Leads religious ceremonies and services, i.e. p articipates in scheduled Shabbat morning services (D’var Torah), conducts Shabbat evening services (with a teaching, story, discussion, or sermon), attends and shares in leading the minyan, manages and leads High Holiday and religious Festival services.
  • Acts as the liaison and portal to the broader community for Baycrest with appropriate external organizations, agencies, etc., including, but not limited to: institutions within the broader Jewish community, alternative faith-based organizations and practitioners, outreach services, etc.
  • Ensures standards of practice and competencies are in compliance with professional and religious governing bodies, i.e. Council of Orthodox Rabbis of Ontario and Toronto, etc. through direct accountability as editor of policies and procedures related to Jewish Faith Based Institution operational requirements
  • Provides guidance on religion-based organizational matters, i.e. Kashrut, holy days, restrictions/limitations on work, etc.
  • Acts as a collaborative and contributory member of Baycrest’s ethics committee, ensuring that Halacha, other Judaic and multi-faith considerations and interpretations are brought to the table; draws in the voices of external chaplaincy voices, as required.
  • Serves as Professional Practice Chief for Spiritual Care and Chaplaincy
  • Supports the operation of the Clinical Pastoral Education training and maintains CASC accreditation and promotes inter-professional education and collaboration across all disciplines.
  • Complies with the legislative, regulatory and internal responsibilities as set forth in the Occupational Health & Safety Act, including health & safety, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (‘ WHMIS’ ), workplace violence, Material Safety Data Sheets (‘ MSDS’ ).
  • Continuously monitors, improves and adapts complex, respectful, meaningful pastoral services, balancing, but transcending the Jewish identity of Baycrest with the needs of a diverse, multi-faith andheterogeneous ethnic geriatric population.

Qualifications include but are not limited to:

  • Completion of a Bachelor of Arts degree program, or equivalent.
  • Successful attainment of semicha or similar rabbinic ordination, preferred
  • Clinical Pastoral Education (‘CPE’) or Pastoral Counselling Education (‘PCE’) certification or equivalent.
  • Membership in good standing in the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care, preferred.
  • Membership in good standing in Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains, preferred.
  • Membership in good standing with a recognized national/international professional rabbinic association (e.g. Rabbinical Council of America, International Rabbinic Federation, Rabbinical Assembly, etc.), preferred
  • Registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
  • 3 years related experience providing spiritual care and chaplaincy services including at least 3 years’ experience in leadership/management capacity
  • Previous experience in a non-profit organization, preferably in a complex health care facility (Hospital and/or Long Term Care Facility) preferred
  • Experience working with Seniors and individuals with dementia is an asset
  • Knowledge of the Religious Freedom Act (Ontario).
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills, superior written, listening and presentation communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Russian, Hebrew and/or Yiddish is an asset.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Halacha (the collective body of Jewish law, including biblical law and later Talmudic and rabbinic law, as well as customs and traditions).
  • Excellent organizational, planning and time management skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of kosher certification, i.e. Kashruth Council of Canada (‘COR’) or similar.
  • Exceptional counseling skills, especially focused on grief counseling.
  • Ability to work with multiple faith, cultural and ethnic groups and familiarity with various religious traditions in addition to Judaism.
