Staff Positions for Mi'kmawey Elementary School & Allan Lafford High School
Mi'kmawey Elementary School and Allan Lafford High School are looking for passionate and dedicated individuals to join our team for the 2025-2026 school year, as well as for some immediate needs. As we continue to grow and enhance the educational experience for our students, we are excited to invite applications for a variety of positions. We are seeking candidates who are committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment for all students.

We invite applications for the following positions:
Positions for Mi'kmawey School (Head Start-Grade 6):
- Learning Center Teacher (Immediate need)
- Grade 1 Teacher
- Bus Driver (Immediate need)
- Educational Assistants (EA)
Positions for Allan Lafford High School (Grade 7-12):
- Mi'kmaq Teacher
- Math Teacher (ALHS) - Academic Math teaching
Learning Center Teacher
Requirements:
- Valid teaching certification in Nova Scotia or eligibility for certification
- Experience in special education, with knowledge of individualized learning plans
- Ability to work closely with students with diverse needs and collaborate with support staff
Duties:
- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students
- Provide direct instruction and support for students in the Learning Center
- Collaborate with teachers, occupational therapists (OT), and speech-language pathologists (SLP) to ensure student success
- Maintain records of student progress and adapt instruction as needed
Grade 1 Teacher
Requirements:
- Valid teaching certification in Nova Scotia or eligibility for certification
- Experience in early childhood or elementary education
- Strong communication and classroom management skills
Duties:
- Teach Grade 1 students in all subject areas, following the Nova Scotia curriculum
- Create a positive and engaging classroom environment
- Assess student progress and provide timely feedback to students and parents
- Collaborate with other staff to create a cohesive and inclusive learning experience
Bus Driver (Immediate need)
Requirements:
- High school graduation (Grade 12) or equivalent
- Completion of a bus driver training course
- Possession of a Class 2B-E driver’s license
- A clean driver’s abstract and experience in a similar transport role is preferred
Duties:
- Safely transport students to and from designated pickup and drop-off points
- Follow district, federal, and provincial guidelines related to student transportation
- Report any behavioral issues encountered while transporting students
- Adhere to provincial and federal pre-trip vehicle inspection standards
- Ensure the bus is well-maintained and suitable for use
- Manage potential conflicts or stress that may arise with students or the public
- Be available on-call throughout the workday as needed
Educational Assistants (EA)
Requirements:
- High school diploma (minimum); post-secondary education in education or a related field is preferred
- Early Childhood Education (ECE) certification is a plus
- Experience working with children, particularly those with special needs, is preferred
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team
Duties:
- Assist classroom teachers in supporting students' academic and behavioral needs
- Provide one-on-one or small group support for students
- Help with classroom management and maintain a positive learning environment
- Support students in their daily tasks and activities
- Handle stressful situations with students or parents and use conflict management strategies
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy protocols
Mi'kmaq Teacher (Allan Lafford High School)
Requirements:
- Valid teaching certification in Nova Scotia or eligibility for certification
- Fluent in the Mi'kmaq language and culture
- Experience in teaching Mi'kmaq students and incorporating cultural perspectives into the curriculum
- Ability to create an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom environment
Duties:
- Teach Mi'kmaq language and culture to high school students at Allan Lafford High School
- Incorporate Mi'kmaq traditions, history, and perspectives into the curriculum
- Develop engaging lessons that support student learning and cultural awareness
- Collaborate with other teachers and staff to create a culturally inclusive school environment
- Provide additional support to students as needed and foster a positive classroom atmosphere
Math Teacher (ALHS) - Immediate need for Academic Math teaching
Requirements:
- Valid teaching certification in Nova Scotia or eligibility for certification
- Strong background in teaching Academic Math at the high school level
- Ability to create engaging lessons and assessments to support student learning
Duties:
- Teach Academic Math to high school students, following the Nova Scotia curriculum
- Prepare lesson plans, assignments, and exams
- Provide additional support to students who need extra help
- Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities
