About the AFN 


The AFN is an advocacy organization that takes direction and fulfills mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development of policy, public education, and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity. 



The AFN was created out of a desire among First Nations leadership for a strong and effective collective advocacy organization. From this, values such as respect for human rights, diversity, justice, and the sovereignty of each rights-holding First Nation guide the work of the organization. 



Position Overview


The AFN is seeking a Strategic Advisor in the Economic Development & Infrastructure Branch.



The Strategic Advisor reports to the Branch Senior Director and plays a pivotal role in providing high-level strategic guidance, policy development, and advisory support within the EDI Branch. This position is instrumental in shaping and advancing the AFN's priorities in economic development, infrastructure, and fisheries by offering strategic insights, fostering relationships, and coordinating initiatives that align with the organization's long-term goals.



Key Responsibilities 



  • Lead the development and implementation of strategic plans and initiatives that support the AFN's objectives in economic development, infrastructure, and fisheries.

  • Provide expert analysis and recommendations on policy matters, ensuring alignment with the AFN's mission and the needs of First Nations communities.

  • Monitor emerging trends, legislative developments, and socio-economic factors that impact First Nations, advising on potential strategies and responses.

  • Serve as a key advisor to the Branch Senior Director, offering strategic counsel on complex issues and decision-making processes.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop cohesive strategies that advance the AFN's economic and infrastructure agendas.

  • Represent the EDI Branch in high-level meetings, forums, and negotiations, articulating strategic positions and fostering partnerships.

  • Establish and maintain strategic relationships with First Nations leaders, government agencies, industry collaborators, and other partners to promote collaborative efforts.

  • Facilitate dialogues and partnerships that enhance the AFN's influence and effectiveness in economic development and infrastructure initiatives.

  • Coordinate with external consultants and advisors to align efforts with the AFN's strategic objectives.

  • Develop and deliver strategic communications, including briefing notes, reports, and presentations, to convey policy positions and strategic initiatives.

  • Act as a spokesperson for the EDI Branch, representing the AFN at conferences, assemblies, and public events.

  • Ensure consistent messaging and alignment of communications with the AFN's overarching strategies.

  • Identify opportunities to enhance the EDI Branch's capacity and effectiveness through strategic planning and resource allocation.

  • Mentor and support staff within the branch, fostering a culture of strategic thinking and continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to the development of internal processes and systems that support strategic objectives.

  • Other duties as assigned



Who Can Apply



  • Postgraduate degree in political science, economics, public administration, or a related field preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

  • Minimum of 7–10 years of senior-level experience in strategic planning, policy development, or advisory roles.

  • In-depth understanding of First Nations political, economic, and social contexts.

  • Proven track record of developing and implementing strategic initiatives in collaboration with diverse stakeholders.

  • Exceptional analytical, communication, and leadership skills.

  • Ability to navigate complex political environments with tact and diplomacy.

  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
