Job Description - Strategic Communications Writer

About UJA Federation of Greater Toronto

At UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, our vision is to lead the most vibrant Jewish community in North America - a community characterized by its diversity, unity, compassion, generosity and commitment to Jewish values. Together with our philanthropic, volunteer and professional leadership, we’re changing lives.

As one of North America’s leading Jewish non-profits, UJA Federation of Greater Toronto works to preserve and strengthen the quality of Jewish life in Greater Toronto, Canada, Israel and around the world. UJA advances this mission through fundraising, programs, and research focused on our strategic pillars: fighting poverty and improving well-being, growing Jewish education and identity, countering antisemitism and hate, and strengthening connections with Israel and Jewish communities worldwide.

About the Opportunity

UJA Federation of Greater Toronto is seeking a highly skilled and strategic writer to support the development of compelling communications that advance organizational priorities, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and amplify UJA’s impact.

This role serves as a key writing partner to senior leaders and works across departments to translate complex ideas into clear, engaging, and audience-focused communications. The successful candidate will bring exceptional writing ability, sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop high-quality written content including speeches, executive communications, donor communications, speaking notes, presentations, opinion pieces, and stakeholder messaging.

  • Serve as a primary writer for senior leaders, translating their ideas and priorities into authentic and compelling communications.

  • Research, interview subject matter experts, and synthesize complex information into clear, audience-focused content.

  • Support organizational initiatives, fundraising efforts, advocacy priorities, and community engagement through strategic communications.

  • Collaborate with Communications, Marketing, Fundraising, Community Mobilization, Events, and other internal stakeholders.

  • Ensure consistency with organizational messaging, voice, and brand standards.

  • Edit and refine content to ensure quality, clarity, and effectiveness.

  • Monitor emerging issues, trends, and community conversations that may impact communications priorities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Postsecondary education in Communications, Journalism, Public Affairs, English, Political Science, or a related field is preferred.

  • 3–5 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, public affairs, executive communications, speechwriting, or a related field.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, interviewing, and storytelling skills.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting senior leaders, executives, elected officials, founders, or subject matter experts through written communications.

  • Strong ability to understand complex topics and communicate them effectively to diverse audiences.

  • Excellent editorial judgment, attention to detail, and project management skills.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver polished work under tight deadlines.

  • Strong awareness of current events, community issues, and communications trends.

  • Experience developing executive communications, thought leadership content, donor communications, or stakeholder-facing materials is considered a strong asset.

*This is a full-time permanent position. Union Level 4. Salary range: $65,00-$75,000 annually, based on experience.  At UJA we support a flexible work schedule and all of our employees engage in hybrid work. Engagement and connection are key to supporting the best employee experience and we want to ensure that this puts balance and well-being at the forefront of our approach to ways of working. In addition to a rich time off policy, UJA’s offices are closed on all Jewish holy days (yom tov) and we support early office closures to observe the Jewish Sabbath (Shabbat).

Qualified applicants are invited to submit a cover letter and resume.
Only those applicants invited for interview will be contacted. Please be advised that all offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of professional references and background checks including Social Media Account(s) and a Police Records Check/Vulnerable Sector Screening.
