Job Description - Street Lighting Technician (Engineering Technologist I)

Are you a collaborative technical professional looking to help light up our city—literally? As a Street Lighting Technician, you will play a vital role in operating and maintaining the electrical infrastructure that keeps our roads safe and our neighborhoods bright. Working within our Operations & Maintenance team, you will support field inspections, maintain critical GIS asset databases, and collaborate closely with contractors and utility partners. This role offers a dynamic mix of detailed technical analysis, such as reviewing engineering plans, and hands-on site investigations. What will you do?

  • Manage GIS Asset Data: Accurately record and update street light and electrical graphical and non-graphical data using the City's GIS Portal and ArcGIS software
  • Coordinate & Inspect: Conduct field surveys, site inspections, and condition assessments to ensure compliance with applicable standards and specifications
  • Address Public Inquiries: Investigate and respond to inquiries from community members, utility partners, and internal City departments regarding lighting outages, repairs, and scheduling
  • Support System Operations: Issue work orders for maintenance, coordinate with contractors on repair times, and prepare/organize documentation for street lighting work orders or system damages
  • Review Plans & Documentation: Evaluate Utility Line Assignments (ULA) plans, Construction Completion Certificates (CCC), and Final Acceptance Certificates (FAC) for streetlighting and secondary electrical projects

  • Completion of a two (2) year diploma in an Electrical, Civil, Materials, or similar Engineering Technologist program
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience related to traffic operations, street lighting, traffic signal control, roadway construction, or utility engineering
  • Eligibility to be recognized as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET)

Assets:

  • Experience working with ArcGIS (or other GIS software) and AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with City of Edmonton Design and Construction Standards, such as Volume 6A\: Road and Walkway Lighting Design Standards and Volume 6B\: Road and Walkway Construction and Materials Standards
  • Familiarity with the Canadian Electrical Code and the EPCOR Customer Connection Guide
  • Prior experience managing document flow and contractor scheduling
  • Knowledge of utility and/or roadway construction practices and procedures

  • Customer Service Excellence: Excellent communication skills to address public inquiries and work productively with community partners
  • Time Management & Adaptability: Proven ability to multi-task, manage fluctuating workloads, and meet tight deadlines for multiple projects
  • Technical Literacy: Proficiency with Google Suite

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess a valid Alberta Driver's License and be able to provide a clean driver's abstract
  • Must wear and maintain appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during field inspections

Work Environment:

  • This position offers a balanced work environment split between a professional office setting and active field environments
  • Fieldwork requires walking, kneeling, and working in varied weather conditions (extreme heat/cold, rain, and snow) near active roadways and electrical infrastructure

Salary Range: $41.437 - $52.085 (Hourly); $73,001.630 - $91,760.750 (Annually)
