Reporting to the Principal, the Student Support Assistant (SSA) supports the inclusion of students in the education program. The SSA, in co-operation with the Student Support Teacher (SST) and the classroom teacher, assists in implementing education programs for students in the class as required, supports the classroom teacher in behavior support strategies as requested, participates in instructional team and school team meetings as requested, provides personal care support as requested, participates in professional growth activities, and acts in a professional manner.
The main responsibilities of the Student Support Assistant are, but are not limited to:
Work under the day-to-day guidance of the classroom teacher and SST to help the classroom teacher deliver the education program, particularly for students whose education program require accommodations and/or curricular individualization.
Must have a patient, caring, student-centred attitude and possess a general knowledge of preferred practices that support inclusion.
Must have general knowledge of the goals, objectives and operations of the school and an ability to be flexible with assigned duties based on student and school needs.
Responsible and accountable for assisting the classroom teacher with organizational tasks as requested, assisting the classroom teacher in implementing education programs for students in the class, as requested and providing personal care support as requested.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a High School or Adult Basic Education program equivalent to Grade 12 or higher. The SSA must have good written and oral communication skills in the languages of instruction that may be required in assisting designated students(s) and good interpersonal skills. They must have an ability to work as a member of a cooperative team and have sound time management skills. First Aid and ASIST training is considered a strong asset. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
